- Kapitel 19 -

(Genesis 19:1–11)

Also in those dayes, when there was no king in Israel, a certaine Leuite dwelt on the side of mount Ephraim, and tooke to wife a concubine out of Beth-lehem Iudah,

And his concubine played ye whore there, and went away from him vnto her fathers house to Beth-lehem Iudah, and there continued the space of foure moneths.

And her husband arose and went after her, to speake friendly vnto her, and to bring her againe: he had also his seruant with him, and a couple of asses: and she brought him vnto her fathers house, and when the yong womans father sawe him, he reioyced of his comming.

And his father in lawe, the yong womans father reteined him: and he abode with him three dayes: so they did eate and drinke, and lodged there.

And when the fourth day came, they arose earely in the morning, and he prepared to depart: then the yong womans father said vnto his sonne in lawe, Comfort thine heart with a morsel of bread, and then go your way.

So they sate downe, and did eate and drinke both of them together. And the yong womans father said vnto the man, Be content, I pray thee, and tary all night, and let thine heart be merie.

And when the man rose vp to depart, his father in lawe was earnest: therefore he returned, and lodged there.

And he arose vp earely the fifth day to depart, and the yong womans father saide, Comfort thine heart, I pray thee: and they taryed vntill after midday, and they both did eate.

Afterwarde when the man arose to depart with his concubine and his seruant, his father in lawe, the yong womans father said vnto him, Beholde nowe, the day draweth towarde euen: I pray you, tary all night: beholde, the sunne goeth to rest: lodge here, that thine heart may be merie, and to morowe get you earely vpon your way, and goe to thy tent.

But the man would not tarry, but arose and departed, and came ouer against Iebus, (which is Ierusalem) and his two asses laden, and his concubine were with him.

When they were neere to Iebus, the day was sore spent, and the seruant said vnto his master, Come, I pray thee, and let vs turne into this citie of the Iebusites, and lodge all night there.

And his master answered him, We will not turne into the citie of strangers that are not of the children of Israel, but we will goe forth to Gibeah.

And he said vnto his seruant, Come, and let vs drawe neere to one of these places, that wee may lodge in Gibeah or in Ramah.

So they went forward vpon their way, and the sunne went downe vpon them neere to Gibeah, which is in Beniamin.

Then they turned thither to goe in and lodge in Gibeah: and when he came, he sate him downe in a streete of the citie: for there was no man that tooke them into his house to lodging.

And beholde, there came an old man from his work out of the field at euen, and the man was of mount Ephraim, but dwelt in Gibeah: and the men of the place were the children of Iemini.

And when he had lift vp his eyes, he sawe a wayfairing man in the streetes of the citie: then this olde man sayde, Whither goest thou, and whence camest thou?

And hee answered him, Wee came from Beth-lehem Iudah, vnto the side of Mout Ephraim: from thence am I: and I went to Beth-lehem Iudah, and go now to the house of the Lord: and no man receiueth mee to house,

Although we haue straw and prouader for our asses, and also bread and wine for me and thine handmayde, and for the boy that is with thy seruant: we lacke nothing.

And the olde man sayde, Peace bee with thee: as for all that thou lackest, shalt thou finde with me: onely abide not in the streete al night.

So he brought him into his house, and gaue fodder vnto the asses: and they washed their feete, and did eate and drinke.

And as they were making their hearts merie, beholde, the men of the citie, wicked men beset the house round about, and smote at the doore, and spake to this olde man the master of the house saying, Bring forth the man that came into thine house that we may knowe him.

And this man the master of ye house went out vnto the, and said vnto them, Nay my brethre, do not so wickedly, I pray you: seeing that this man is come into mine house, do not this villenie.

Behold, here is my daughter, a virgine, and his concubine: them wil I bring out nowe, and humble them, and doe with them what seemeth you good: but to this man doe not this villenie.

But the men woulde not hearken to him: therefore ye man tooke his concubine, and brought her out vnto them: and they knewe her and abused her all the night vnto the morning: and when the day began to spring, they let her goe.

So the woman came in the dawning of the day, and fell downe at the doore of the mans house where her Lord was, till the light day.

And her lorde arose in the morning, and opened the doores of the house, and went out to goe his way, and beholde, the woman his concubine was dead at the doore of the house and her handes lay vpon the thresholde.

And hee said vnto her, Vp and let vs goe: but shee answered not. Then he tooke her vp vpon the asse, and the man rose vp, and went vnto his place.

And whe he was come to his house, he took a knife, and laid hand on his concubine, and deuided her in pieces with her bones into twelue parts, and sent her through all quarters of Israel.

And all that saw it, said, There was no such thing done or seene since the time that the children of Israel came vp from the lande of Egypt vnto this day: consider the matter, consult and giue sentence.

Die Konkubine des Leviten

(1. Mose 19,1-11)

Es war ein Levit, der wohnte an der Grenze des Gebirges Ephraim. Dieser nahm sich ein Weib von Bethlehem in Juda;

sie aber verließ ihn und kehrte in das Haus ihres Vaters nach Bethlehem zurück, und blieb bei diesem vier Monate.

Da zog ihr Mann ihr nach, um sich mit ihr zu versöhnen, und ihr zu Herzen zu reden, und sie wieder mit sich zurückzubringen; und er hatte einen Diener und zwei Esel bei sich. Sie nahm ihn auf und führte ihn in das Haus ihres Vaters. Als sein Schwiegervater dies hörte und ihn sah, ging er ihm erfreut entgegen.

und fiel ihm um den Hals. Und der Schwiegersohn blieb drei Tage in dem Hause seines Schwiegervaters und aß und trank mit ihm als Freund.

Am vierten Tage aber stand er am frühen Morgen auf und wollte sich auf den Weg machen. Da hielt ihn sein Schwiegervater und sprach zu ihm: Genieße zuvor einen Bissen Brot und stärke deinen Magen, nachher magst du ziehen!

So setzten sie sich denn zusammen und aßen und tranken. Dann sprach der Vater des Mädchens zu seinem Schwiegersohne: Ich bitte dich, bleibe heute hier und laß uns zusammen fröhlich sein.

Aber er stand auf und schickte sich an, fortzuziehen. Desungeachtet hielt ihn sein Schwiegervater dringend zurück und nötigte ihn, bei ihm zu bleiben.

Am andern Morgen aber rüstete sich der Levit zur Reise. Da sagte sein Schwiegervater wieder zu ihm: Ich bitte dich, nimm ein wenig Speise zu dir und sammle Kräfte, bis der Tag vorgerückt ist, dann magst du reisen. So aßen sie denn zusammen.

Als nun der Jüngling aufstand, um mit seinem Weibe und seinem Diener wegzuziehen, sprach sein Schwiegervater wiederum zu ihm: Siehe doch, der Tag neigt sich dem Untergange zu und nähert sich dem Abende; bleibe auch heute bei mir und halte einen fröhlichen Tag und morgen magst du ziehen, um nach Hause zu kommen.

Aber der Schwiegersohn wollte nicht auf sein Zureden hören, sondern machte sich zugleich auf und kam vor bis nach Jebus, das mit anderm Namen auch Jerusalem heißt, und führte zwei beladene Esel und seine Nebenfrau mit sich.

Schon waren sie nahe bei Jebus, während der Tag in Nacht überging, da sprach der Diener zu seinem Herrn: Komm, ich bitte, lass uns in die Stadt der Jebusiter einkehren und darin bleiben.

Der Herr antwortete ihm: Ich will nicht in die Stadt eines fremden Volkes, das nicht zu den Söhnen Israels gehört, eintreten, sondern bis Gabaa weiterziehen,

und wenn ich dorthin gekommen, so werden wir daselbst bleiben oder doch in der Stadt Rama.

So zogen sie den bei Jebus vorüber und setzten ihre angefangene Reise fort, und die Sonne ging ihnen unter, als sie nahe bei Gabaa waren, welches im Stamme Benjamin liegt.

Da wendeten sie sich dorthin, um daselbst zu bleiben. Als sie hineingekommen waren, ließen sie sich auf der Straße der Stadt nieder, denn niemand wollte sie gastfreundlich aufnehmen.

Siehe, da kam ein Greis des Weges, welcher am Abend von seiner Arbeit vom Felde zurückkehrte, der ebenfalls vom Gebirge Ephraim war und als Fremdling in Gabaa wohnte, während die Leute dieser Gegend Söhne Jeminis waren.

Als der Greis seine Augen erhob, sah er einen Mann mit seinem Reisegepäck in der Straße sitzen und sprach zu ihm: Woher kommst du und wohin gehst du?

Er antwortete ihm: Wir kommen von Bethlehem in Juda und ziehen in unsere Heimat, die an der Seite des Gebirges Ephraim liegt, von wo wir nach Bethlehem gezogen waren; und jetzt gehen wir zum Hause Gottes hin, und niemand will uns unter sein Dach aufnehmen,

obwohl wir Stroh und Heu zum Futter für die Esel haben, und Brot und Wein für mich und deine Magd, und den Diener, der bei mir ist; wir brauchen nichts als Unterkunft.

Da antwortete ihm der Greis: Friede sei mit dir! Alles, was notwendig ist, will ich dir reichen; nur, bitte ich, bleibe nicht auf der Straße.

Hierauf führte er ihn in sein Haus und gab den Eseln Futter; und nachdem sie ihre Füße gewaschen, lud er sie zum Mahle.

Das Verbrechen von Gibea

Während sie nun bei Tisch waren und sich nach den Beschwerden der Reise mit Speise und Trank erquickten, kamen die Leute jener Stadt, Belialssöhne (das ist zügellose Leute), umgaben das Haus des Greises, begannen an die Tür zu klopfen und riefen dem Herrn des Hauses zu und sprachen: Bringe den Mann heraus, der in dein Haus eingekehrt ist, damit wir ihn missbrauchen!

Da ging der Greis zu ihnen hinaus und sprach: Nicht doch, meine Brüder! tuet doch diese Sünde nicht, denn der Mann ist als Gast zu mir eingetreten; lasset ab von dieser Torheit!

Ich habe eine Tochter, die noch Jungfrau ist, und dieser Mann hat eine Nebenfrau, diese will ich zu euch herausführen, dass ihr ihnen Gewalt antuet und eure Lust an ihnen kühlet; nur verübet doch, ich bitte, diese widernatürliche Missetat an dem Manne nicht!

Aber sie wollten auf seine Rede nicht hören. Als der Mann dies sah, brachte er seine Nebenfrau zu ihnen heraus und überließ sie ihrem Mutwillen; sie missbrauchten dieselbe die ganze Nacht und ließen sie erst am Morgen gehen.

Als nun das Dunkel wich, kam das Weib zur Tür des Hauses, in dem ihr Herr übernachtete, und brach daselbst zusammen.

Da nun der Mann am Morgen aufstand und die Türe aufmachte, um die angefangene Reise zu vollenden: siehe, da lag sein Nebenweib vor der Türe mit ausgestreckten Händen auf der Schwelle.

Er sprach zu ihr, weil er meinte, sie ruhe: Stehe auf, und lass uns fortgehen! Da sie aber nicht antwortete, erkannte er, dass sie tot war; er hob sie auf, lud sie auf seinen Esel und kehrte heim in sein Haus.

Dort angekommen, nahm er ein Schwert, zerhieb den Leichnam seines Weibes samt den Gebeinen in zwölf Stücke und sandte sie in alle Gaue Israels umher.

Da riefen alle, die es sahen: Eine solche Tat ist noch niemals geschehen in Israel von dem Tage an, wo unsere Väter aus Ägypten heraufgezogen sind, bis auf diesen Tag; urteilet und beschließet gemeinsam, was zu tun ist.
