- Kapitel 21 -

And as we launched forth, and were departed from them, we came with a straight course vnto Coos, and the day following vnto the Rhodes, and from thence vnto Patara.

And we found a ship that went ouer vnto Phenice, and went aboard, and set forth.

And whe we had discouered Cyprus, we left it on the left hand, and sailed toward Syria, and arriued at Tyrus: for there the ship vnladed ye burden.

And when we had found disciples, we taried there seuen dayes. And they told Paul through the Spirit, that he should not goe vp to Hierusalem.

But when the dayes were ended, we departed and went our way, and they all accompanied vs with their wiues and children, euen out of the citie: and we kneeling downe on the shore, prayed.

Then when we had embraced one another, we tooke ship, and they returned home.

And when we had ended the course from Tyrus, we arriued at Ptolemais, and saluted the brethren, and abode with them one day.

Paul Visits Philip the Evangelist

And the next day, Paul and we that were with him, departed, and came vnto Cesarea: and we entred into the house of Philippe the Euangelist, which was one of the seuen Deacons, and abode with him.

Now he had foure daughters virgins, which did prophecie.

And as we taried there many dayes, there came a certaine Prophet from Iudea, named Agabus.

And when he was come vnto vs, he tooke Pauls girdle, and bound his owne hands and feete, and sayd, Thus sayth the holy Ghost, So shall the Iewes at Hierusalem binde the man that oweth this girdle, and shall deliuer him into the hands of the Gentiles.

And when we had heard these things, both we and other of the same place besought him that he would not go vp to Hierusalem.

Then Paul answered, and sayd, What doe ye weeping and breaking mine heart? For I am ready not to be bound onely, but also to die at Hierusalem for the Name of the Lord Iesus.

So when he would not be perswaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done.

And after those dayes we trussed vp our fardels, and went vp to Hierusalem.

There went with vs also certaine of the disciples of Cesarea, and brought with them one Mnason of Cyprus, an olde disciple, with whome we should lodge.

Paul’s Arrival at Jerusalem

And when we were come to Hierusalem, the brethren receiued vs gladly.

And the next day Paul went in with vs vnto Iames: and all the Elders were there assembled.

And when he had embraced them, hee tolde by order all things, that God had wrought among the Gentiles by his ministration.

So when they heard it, they glorified God, and sayd vnto him, Thou seest, brother, how many thousand Iewes there are which beleeue, and they are all zealous of the Law:

Now they are informed of thee, that thou teachest all the Iewes, which are among the Gentiles, to forsake Moses, and sayest that they ought not to circumcise their sonnes, neither to liue after the customes.

What is then to be done? the multitude must needes come together: for they shall heare that thou art come.

Doe therefore this that we say to thee. We haue foure men, which haue made a vowe,

Them take, and purifie thy selfe with them, and contribute with them, that they may shaue their heads: and all shall knowe, that those things, whereof they haue bene informed concerning thee, are nothing, but that thou thy selfe also walkest and keepest the Lawe.

For as touching ye Gentiles, which beleeue, we haue written, and determined that they obserue no such thing, but that they keepe themselues from things offred to idoles, and from blood, and from that that is strangled, and from fornication.

Then Paul tooke the men, and the next day was purified with them, and entred into the Temple, declaring the accomplishment of the dayes of the purification, vntill that an offering should be offered for euery one of them.

Paul Seized at the Temple

And when the seuen dayes were almost ended, the Iewes which were of Asia (when they sawe him in the Temple) moued all the people, and laide hands on him,

Crying, Men of Israel, helpe: this is the man that teacheth all men euery where against the people, and the Lawe, and this place: moreouer, he hath brought Grecians into the Temple, and hath polluted this holy place.

For they had seene before Trophimus an Ephesian with him in the citie, whom they supposed that Paul had brought into the Temple.

Then all the citie was moued, and the people ran together: and they tooke Paul and drewe him out of the Temple, and forth with the doores were shut.

But as they went about to kill him, tydings came vnto the chiefe captaine of the band, that all Hierusalem was on an vproare.

Who immediately tooke souldiers and Centurions, and ran downe vnto them: and when they sawe the chiefe Captaine and the souldiers, they left beating of Paul.

Then the chiefe Captaine came neere and tooke him, and commanded him to be bound with two chaines, and demaunded who he was, and what he had done.

And one cryed this, another that, among the people. So when he could not know the certeintie for the tumult, he commanded him to be led into the castell.

And when hee came vnto the grieces, it was so that he was borne of the souldiers, for the violence of the people.

For the multitude of the people followed after, crying, Away with him.

Paul Addresses the Crowd

And as Paul should haue bene led into the castell, he sayd vnto the chiefe Captaine, May I speake vnto thee? Who sayd, Canst thou speake Greeke?

Art not thou the Egyptian who before these dayes raised a sedition, and led out into the wildernesse foure thousande men that were murtherers?

Then Paul sayde, Doubtlesse, I am a man which am a Iewe, and citizen of Tarsus, a famous citie of Cilicia, and I beseech thee, suffer mee to speake vnto the people.

And when he had giuen him licence, Paul stoode on the grieces, and beckened with the hand vnto the people: and when there was made great silence, hee spake vnto them in the Hebrewe tongue, saying,

Warnungen auf der Reise nach Jerusalem

Als es aber geschehen war, dass wir uns von ihnen losgerissen hatten und abfuhren, kamen wir geraden Laufes nach Kos, am folgenden Tage nach Rhodus, und von da nach Patara.

Und da wir ein Schiff fanden, welches nach Phönicien fuhr, stiegen wir ein, und fuhren ab.

Als wir nun Cypern zu Gesichte bekamen, ließen wir es links liegen, und fuhren auf Syrien zu, und kamen nach Tyrus; denn dort sollte das Schiff die Fracht ausladen.

Hier fanden wir Jünger, und blieben daselbst sieben Tage. Diese sagten Paulus durch den Geist, er solle nicht nach Jerusalem hinaufgehen.

Nachdem die Tage zu Ende waren, begaben wir uns auf die Reise. Alle geleiteten uns mit Frauen und Kindern bis zur Stadt hinaus; und am Ufer knieten wir nieder und beteten.

Und als wir voneinander Abschied genommen, stiegen wir in das Schiff, sie aber kehrten nach Hause zurück.

Wir beschlossen unsere Seereise mit der Fahrt von Tyrus nach Ptolemais; dort begrüßten wir die Brüder, und blieben einen Tag bei ihnen.

Am anderen Tage aber reisten wir ab, und kamen nach Cäsarea. Dort traten wir in das Haus des Evangelisten Philippus, der einer von den Sieben war, und blieben bei ihm.

Dieser hatte vier Töchter, welche Jungfrauen waren, und weissagten.

Als wir dort einige Tage verweilten, kam ein Prophet von Judäa hinzu, Agabus mit Namen.

Da dieser zu uns kam, nahm er den Gürtel des Paulus, band sich Hände und Füße, und sprach: So spricht der Heilige Geist: Den Mann, dem dieser Gürtel gehört, werden die Juden zu Jerusalem also binden, und ihn in die Hände der Heiden überliefern.

Da wir dies hörten, baten wir und die Einwohner des Ortes, er möchte nicht nach Jerusalem hinaufgehen.

Paulus aber antwortete, und sprach: Was tut ihr, dass ihr weinet, und mir mein Herz betrübet? Ich bin ja bereit, nicht nur mich binden zu lassen, sondern auch zu sterben in Jerusalem für den Namen des Herrn Jesus.

Da wir ihn nun nicht überreden konnten, ließen wir ab und sprachen: Des Herrn Wille geschehe!

Paulus wird zum Frieden gedrängt

Nach diesen Tagen aber machten wir uns reisefertig, und gingen hinauf nach Jerusalem.

Auch einige von den Jüngern aus Cäsarea kamen mit uns, und brachten einen gewissen Mnason aus Cypern, einen alten Jünger mit sich, bei dem wir herbergen sollten.

Da wir nun nach Jerusalem kamen, nahmen uns die Brüder mit Freuden auf.

Am folgenden Tage aber ging Paulus mit uns zu Jakobus, und alle Vorsteher kamen dort zusammen.

Nachdem er diese begrüßt hatte, erzählte er ihnen im einzelnen, was Gott durch seinen Dienst unter den Heiden gewirkt habe.

Als diese es hörten, priesen sie Gott, und sprachen zu ihm: Du siehst, Bruder! wie viele Tausende unter den Juden gläubig geworden sind, die doch alle Eiferer für das Gesetz sind.

Nun haben sie von dir gehört, dass du die Juden, welche unter den Heiden wohnen, zum Abfalle von Moses beredest, und sagest, sie sollten ihre Söhne nicht beschneiden, und nicht nach den Gebräuchen wandeln.

Was ist nun zu tun? Jedenfalls wird das Volk zusammenströmen, denn sie werden hören, dass du gekommen bist.

Deshalb tue das, was wir dir sagen: Es sind vier Männer bei uns, die ein Gelübde auf sich haben.

Diese nimm zu dir, lasse dich mit ihnen heiligen, und bezahle für sie, damit sie sich das Haupt scheren lassen; und so werden alle inne werden, dass das, was sie von dir gehört haben, falsch ist, dass du vielmehr selbst das Gesetz treu beobachtest.

Was aber die Heiden angeht, welche gläubig geworden sind, haben wir geschrieben und entschieden, dass sie sich vom Götzenopfer, vom Blute, vom Erstickten und von der Unzucht enthalten sollen.

Verhaftet im Tempel

Da nahm Paulus die Männer zu sich, reinigte sich mit ihnen am folgenden Tage, ging in den Tempel, und kündigte an, dass die Tage der Reinigung zu Ende gingen, sobald für einen jeden von ihnen das Opfer dargebracht sein würde.

Als aber die sieben Tage vorüber waren, und die Juden aus Asien ihn im Tempel sahen, brachten sie das ganze Volk in Aufruhr, legten Hand an ihn, und schrien:

Ihr Männer von Israel, helft. Dies ist der Mensch, welcher wider das Volk, das Gesetz und diese Stätte alle allenthalben lehrt, überdies hat er auch Heiden in den Tempel eingeführt und diese heilige Stätte entweihet.

Sie hatten nämlich den Trophimus aus Ephesus in der Stadt mit ihm gesehen, und glaubten, Paulus habe ihn mit sich in den Tempel genommen.

Da kam die ganze Stadt in Bewegung, und es entstand ein Zusammenlauf des Volkes. Und sie ergriffen den Paulus, und schleppten ihn aus dem Tempel heraus, und sogleich wurden die Tore geschlossen.

Da sie ihn nun zu töten suchten, wurde dem Obersten der Wache angezeigt: Ganz Jerusalem ist in Aufruhr.

Dieser nahm sogleich Soldaten und Hauptleute zu sich, und eilte zu ihnen hinab. Als sie nun den Obersten und die Soldaten sahen, hörten sie auf, Paulus zu schlagen.

Der oberste aber trat hinzu, ergriff ihn, befahl, ihn mit zwei Ketten zu fesseln, und fragte ihn, wer er sei, und was er getan habe.

Da schrien die einen in der Volksmenge dies, die anderen jenes. Weil er nun wegen des Getümmels nichts Gewisses erfahren konnte, befahl er ihn in das Lager zu bringen.

Als er nun an die Stufen kam, geschah es, dass er von den Soldaten wegen des andrängenden Volkes getragen wurde.

Denn die Volksmenge drängte nach, und schrie: Hinweg mit ihm!

Ansprache an den Mob in Jerusalem

Da nun Paulus eben in das Lager geführt werden sollte, sagte er zu dem Obersten: Ist es mir erlaubt, etwas zu dir zu reden? Er sprach: Du verstehst griechisch?

Bist du denn nicht der Egypter, der vor diesen Tagen Aufruhr anstiftete, und die viertausend Meuchelmörder in die Wüste hinausführte?

Paulus aber sprach zu ihm: Ich bin ein Jude aus Tarsus, Bürger einer nicht unberühmten Stadt Ciliciens. Ich bitte dich aber, erlaube mir zum Volke zu reden.

Als er es nun erlaubte, trat Paulus auf die Stufen und winkte mit der Hand dem Volke. Da entstand eine große Stille, und er redete sie in hebräischer Sprache an, und sagte:
