- Kapitel 20 -

Nowe after the tumult was appeased, Paul called the disciples vnto him, and embraced them, and departed to goe into Macedonia.

And when hee had gone through those parts, and had exhorted them with many words, he came into Grecia.

And hauing taried there three moneths, because the Iewes layde waite for him, as hee was about to saile into Syria, hee purposed to returne through Macedonia.

And there accompanied him into Asia, Sopater of Berea, and of them of Thessalonica, Aristarchus, and Secundus, and Gaius of Derbe, and Timotheus, and of them of Asia, Tychicus, and Trophimus.

These went before, and taried vs at Troas.

And we sailed forth from Philippi, after the dayes of vnleauened bread, and came vnto them to Troas in fiue dayes, where we abode seuen dayes.

Eutychus Revived at Troas

(2 Kings 4:18–37)

And the first day of the weeke, the disciples being come together to breake bread, Paul preached vnto them, ready to depart on the morrow, and continued the preaching vnto midnight.

And there were many lightes in an vpper chamber, where they were gathered together.

And there sate in a windowe a certaine yong man, named Eutychus, fallen into a dead sleepe: and as Paul was long preaching, hee ouercome with sleepe, fell downe from the thirde loft, and was taken vp dead.

But Paul went downe, and layde himselfe vpon him, and embraced him, saying, Trouble not your selues: for his life is in him.

Then when Paul was come vp againe, and had broken bread, and eaten, hauing spoken a long while till the dawning of the day, hee so departed.

And they brought the boye aliue, and they were not a litle comforted.

From Troas to Miletus

Then we went before to shippe, and sailed vnto the citie Assos, that wee might receiue Paul there: for so had hee appointed, and would himselfe goe afoote.

Now when he was come vnto vs to Assos, and we had receiued him, we came to Mitylenes.

And wee sailed thence, and came the next day ouer against Chios, and the next day we arriued at Samos, and tarried at Trogyllium: the next day we came to Miletum.

For Paul had determined to saile by Ephesus, because hee woulde not spend the time in Asia: for he hasted to be, if hee could possible, at Hierusalem, at the day of Pentecost.

Paul’s Farewell to the Ephesians

Wherefore from Miletum, hee sent to Ephesus, and called the Elders of the Church.

Who when they were come to him, hee said vnto them, Ye know from the first day that I came into Asia, after what maner I haue bene with you at all seasons,

Seruing the Lord with all modestie, and with many teares, and tentations, which came vnto me by the layings awaite of the Iewes,

And how I kept backe nothing that was profitable, but haue shewed you, and taught you openly and throughout euery house,

Witnessing both to the Iewes, and to the Grecians the repentance towarde God, and faith toward our Lord Iesus Christ.

And nowe beholde, I goe bound in the Spirit vnto Hierusalem, and know not what things shall come vnto me there,

Saue that ye holy Ghost witnesseth in euery citie, saying, that bondes and afflictions abide me.

But I passe not at all, neither is my life deare vnto my selfe, so that I may fulfill my course with ioye, and the ministration which I haue receiued of the Lord Iesus, to testifie the Gospell of the grace of God.

And now behold, I know that henceforth ye all, through whome I haue gone preaching the kingdome of God, shall see my face no more.

Wherefore I take you to recorde this day, that I am pure from the blood of all men.

For I haue kept nothing backe, but haue shewed you all the counsell of God.

Take heede therefore vnto your selues, and to all the flocke, whereof the holy Ghost hath made you Ouerseers, to feede the Church of God, which hee hath purchased with that his owne blood.

For I knowe this, that after my departing shall grieuous wolues enter in among you, not sparing the flocke.

Moreouer of your owne selues shall men arise speaking peruerse thinges, to drawe disciples after them.

Therefore watche, and remember, that by the space of three yeres I ceased not to warne euery one, both night and day with teares.

And nowe brethren, I commend you to God, and to the worde of his grace, which is able to build further, and to giue you an inheritance, among all them, which are sanctified.

I haue coueted no mans siluer, nor gold, nor apparell.

Yea, ye knowe, that these handes haue ministred vnto my necessities, and to them that were with me.

I haue shewed you all things, howe that so labouring, ye ought to support the weake, and to remember the wordes of the Lord Iesus, howe that hee saide, It is a blessed thing to giue, rather then to receiue.

And when he had thus spoken, he kneeled downe, and prayed with them all.

Then they wept all abundantly, and fell on Pauls necke, and kissed him,

Being chiefly sorie for the words which he spake, That they should see his face no more. And they accompanied him vnto the shippe.

Reisen in Griechenland

Nachdem nun der Aufruhr aufgehört hatte, rief Paulus die Jünger zu sich, gab ihnen Ermahnungen, nahm Abschied, und reiste ab, um nach Mazedonien zu gehen.

Als er aber jene Gegenden durchzogen, und die Jünger mit vielen Worten ermahnt hatte, kam er nach Griechenland.

Nachdem er dort drei Monate zugebracht hatte, wurden ihm, als er eben nach Syrien absegeln wollte, von den Juden Nachstellungen bereitet, und er entschloß sich, den Rückweg über Mazedonien zu nehmen.

Es begleiteten ihn aber Sopater aus Beröa, Sohn des Pyrrghus; von den Thessalonichern Aristarchus und Secundus; und Gajus von Derbe und Timotheus; aus Asien aber Tychicus und Trophimus.

Diese gingen voran, und warteten auf uns in Troas.

Wir aber fuhren nach den Tagen der ungesäuerten Brote von Philippi ab, und kamen in fünf Tagen zu ihnen nach Troas, wo wir sieben Tage verweilten.

Dienst in Troas

(2. Könige 4,18-37)

Als wir aber am ersten Tage der Woche zum Brotbrechen zusammengekommen waren, hielt Paulus eine Unterredung mit Ihnen, weil er am folgenden Tage abreisen wollte, und setzte seine Rede fort bis Mitternacht.

Es waren aber viele Lampen im Obergemache, wo wir versammelt waren.

Nun saß da ein Jüngling mit Namen Eutychus auf dem Fenster. Dieser sank in tiefen Schlaf, als Paulus so lange redete, fiel vom Schlafe überwältigt vom dritten Stockwerke hinunter, und wurde tot aufgehoben.

Da ging Paulus zu ihm hinab, legte sich auf ihn, umfasste ihn, und sprach: seid unbesorgt, denn seine Seele ist in ihm.

Dann ging er wieder hinauf, brach das Brot, aß, und redete noch geraume Zeit, bis zu Tagesanbruch, und so reiste er ab.

Den Jüngling aber führten sie lebend herbei, und wurden nicht wenig getröstet.

Von Troas nach Milet

Wir aber gingen zu Schiff, und fuhren nach Assos, wo wir Paulus aufnehmen wollten; denn so hatte er angeordnet, da er selbst zu Lande hinreisen wollte.

Als er nun in Assos zu uns kam, nahmen wir ihn auf, und kamen nach Mitylene.

Von dort fuhren wir ab, und kamen am folgenden Tage Chios gegenüber. Des andern Tages landeten wir bei Samos, und am folgenden Tage kamen wir nach Milet.

Denn Paulus hatte beschlossen, an Ephesus vorbeizufahren, damit er in Asien nicht aufgehalten würde; er eilte nämlich, um, wofern es ihm möglich wäre, am Pfingsttage in Jerusalem zu sein.

Die Ältesten von Ephesus ermahnt

Von Milet aber sandte er nach Ephesus, und berief die Vorsteher der Kirche.

Als sie nun zu ihm kamen und beisammen waren, sprach er zu ihnen: Ihr wisset, wie ich vom ersten Tage an, da ich nach Asien gekommen, die ganze Zeit hindurch, unter euch gewesen bin,

indem ich den Herrn diente mit aller Demut, unter Tränen und Prüfungen, die mir durch die Nachstellungen der Juden zustießen;

wie ich nichts vorenthielt von dem was heilsam ist, dass ich es euch nicht verkündet, und sowohl öffentlich, als auch in den Häusern gelehrt hätte,

Juden und Heiden Zeugnis gebend von der Bekehrung zu Gott, und dem Glauben an unsern Herrn Jesus Christus.

Und nun sehet, gehe ich gebunden im Geiste nach Jerusalem, ohne zu wissen, was mir dort begegnen wird,

außer dass der Heilige Geist mir von Stadt zu Stadt Zeugnis gibt, und sagt, dass Fesseln und Drangsale zu Jerusalem meiner warten.

Allein von diesem allem fürchte ich nichts, und achte mein Leben nicht höher als mich, wenn ich nur meinen Lauf und den Dienst des Wortes vollende, den ich von dem Herrn Jesus empfangen habe, Zeugnis abzulegen von dem Evangelium der Gnade Gottes.

Und nun sehet, ich weiß, dass ihr alle, bei denen ich auf meinen Reisen das Reich Gottes verkündet habe, mein Angesicht nicht mehr sehen werdet.

Darum bezeuge ich euch an dem heutigen Tage, dass ich rein bin vom Blute aller.

Denn ich habe mich nicht entzogen, euch den ganzen Ratschluss Gottes zu verkünden.

Habet Acht auf euch und auf die gesamte Herde, in welcher euch der Heilige Geist zu Bischöfen gesetzet hat, die Kirche Gottes zu regieren, welche er mit seinem Blute erworben.

Ich weiß, dass nach meiner Abreise reißende Wölfe unter euch eindringen werden, die der Herde nicht schonen.

Und aus euch selbst werden Männer aufstehen, welche Verkehrtes reden, um die Jünger nach sich zu ziehen.

Darum wachet, und seid eingedenk, dass ich drei Jahre lang, Tag und Nacht, nicht aufgehört habe, einen jeden einzelnen von euch mit Tränen zu ermahnen.

Und nunmehr empfehle ich euch Gott und dem Worte seiner Gnade, ihm, der da mächtig ist aufzubauen, und euch mit allen Geheiligten das Erbe zu geben.

Silber oder Gold oder Kleider habe ich von niemanden begehrt, wie

ihr selbst wisset, dass diese meine Hände für meine, und die Bedürfnisse derer, die bei mir waren, gesorgt haben.

In allen Stücken habe ich euch gezeigt, dass man so arbeitend sich der Schwachen annehmen und eingedenk sein muss des Wortes des Herrn Jesus, da er sagte: Geben ist seliger als nehmen.

Als er dies gesagt hatte, kniete er nieder, und betete mit ihnen allen.

Es entstand aber ein lautes Weinen bei allen, und sie fielen Paulus um den Hals, und küssten ihn,

am meisten betrübt über das Wort, welches er gesagt hatte, dass sie sein Angesicht nicht mehr sehen würden. Und sie geleiteten ihn an das Schiff.
