- Kapitel 4 -

And Samuel spake vnto all Israel: and Israel went out against the Philistims to battel and pitched beside Eben-ezer: and the Philistims pitched in Aphek.

And the Philistims put themselues in aray against Israel: and when they ioyned the battell, Israel was smitten downe before the Philistims: who slewe of the armie in the fielde about foure thousand men.

So when the people were come into the campe, the Elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the Lord smitten vs this day before ye Philistims? let vs bring the Arke of the couenant of the Lord out of Shiloh vnto vs, that when it commeth among vs, it may saue vs out of the hande of our enemies.

Then the people sent to Shiloh, and brought from thence the Arke of the couenant of the Lord of hostes, who dwelleth betweene the Cherubims: and there were the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni, and Phinehas, with the Arke of the couenant of God.

And when the Arke of the couenant of the Lord came into the hoste, all Israel shouted a mightie shoute, so that the earth rang againe.

And when the Philistims heard the noyse of the shoute, they said, What meaneth the sound of this mightie shoute in the host of the Ebrewes? and they vnderstoode, that the Arke of the Lord was come into the hoste.

And the Philistims were afraide, and saide, God is come into the hoste: therefore saide they, Wo vnto vs: for it hath not bene so heretofore.

Wo vnto vs, who shall deliuer vs out of the hande of these mightie Gods? these are the Gods that smote the Egyptians with all the plagues in the wildernes.

Be strong and play the men, O Philistims, that ye be not seruants vnto the Ebrewes, as they haue serued you: be valiant therefore, and fight.

And the Philistims fought, and Israel was smitten downe, and fled euery man into his tent: and there was an exceeding great slaughter: for there fell of Israel thirtie thousand footemen.

And the Arke of God was taken, and the two sonnes of Eli, Hophni and Phinehas died.

The Death of Eli

And there ranne a man of Beniamin out of the armie, and came to Shiloh the same day with his clothes rent, and earth vpon his head.

And when hee came, loe, Eli sate vpon a seate by the wayside, wayting: for his heart feared for the Arke of God and when the man came into the citie to tell it, all the citie cried out.

And when Eli heard the noyse of the crying, he sayd, What meaneth this noyse of the tumult? and the man came in hastily, and tolde Eli.

(Nowe Eli was fourescore and eighteene yeere olde, and his eyes were dimme that hee could not see)

And the man sayd vnto Eli, I came from the armie, and I fled this day out of the hoste: and he sayd, What thing is done, my sonne?

Then the messenger answered and sayd, Israel is fled before the Philistims, and there hath bene also a great slaughter among the people: and moreouer thy two sonnes, Hophni and Phinehas are dead, and the Arke of God is taken.

And when he had made mention of the Arke of God, Eli fell from his seate backward by the side of the gate, and his necke was broken, and he dyed: for he was an olde man and heauie: and he had iudged Israel fourtie yeeres.

And his daughter in lawe Phinehas wife was with childe neere her trauell: and when she heard the report that the Arke of God was taken, and that her father in lawe and her husband were dead, she bowed her selfe, and trauailed: for her paines came vpon her.

And about the time of her death, the women that stoode about her, sayd vnto her, Feare not: for thou hast borne a sonne: but she answered not, nor regarded it.

And she named the childe Ichabod, saying, The glory is departed from Israel, because the Arke of God was taken, and because of her father in lawe and her husband.

She sayde againe, The glory is departed from Israel: for the Arke of God is taken.

Da begab es sich in jenen Tagen, dass die Philister sich zum Kampfe sammelten; und Israel zog den Philistern zum Streite entgegen und lagerte sich bei dem Steine der Hilfe. Die Philister nun kamen nach Aphek

Die Arche Gottes wird gefangen genommen

und stellten sich in Schlachtordnung gegen Israel auf. Als aber der Kampf begann, floh Israel vor den Philistern, und es wurden in dieser Schlacht über das weite Feld hin zerstreut bei viertausend Mann erschlagen.

Da nun das Volk in das Lager zurückkam, sprachen die Ältesten von Israel: Warum hat uns heute der Herr vor den Philistern geschlagen? Lasset uns die Lade des Bundes des Herrn von Silo hierher bringen, damit sie in unsere Mitte komme und uns aus der Hand unserer Feinde errette!

Das Volk also sandte nach Silo, und sie holten von da die Bundeslade des Herrn der Heerscharen, der über dem Cherubim thront; und die beiden Söhne Helis, Ophni und Phinees, waren bei der Lade des Bundes des Herrn.

Als die Lade des Bundes des Herrn in das Lager kam, erhob ganz Israel ein Jubelgeschrei, dass die Erde davon erdröhnte.

Da die Philister den Schall des Jauchzens hörten, sprachen sie: Was bedeutet dieser Schall großen Jubelgeschreies im Lager der Hebräer? Und als sie erfuhren, dass die Lade des Herrn in das Lager gekommen sei,

fürchteten sich die Philister und sprachen: Gott ist in das Lager gekommen! Und aufseufzend, sprachen sie:

Wehe uns! denn solches Frohlocken war weder gestern noch zuvor. Wehe uns! wer wird uns aus der Hand dieser erhabenen Götter retten? Das sind die Götter, welche Ägypten mit allerlei Plagen in die Wüste geschlagen haben.

Fasset Mut und zeiget euch als Männer, ihr Philister! dass ihr den Hebräern nicht dienstbar werdet, wie sie euch dienstbar waren, fasset Mut und kämpfet!

Die Philister zogen also in den Kampf, und Israel ward geschlagen, und ein jeder floh in sein Zelt; und die Niederlage war sehr groß; es fielen von Israel dreißigtausend Mann Fußvolk.

Auch ward die Lade Gottes weggenommen, und die beiden Söhne Helis, Ophni und Phinees, kamen um.

Eli's Tod

Ein Mann aus Benjamin aber lief aus der Schlacht weg und kam an demselben Tage nach Silo, mit zerrissenem Kleide, und das Haupt mit Staub bestreut.

Als dieser ankam, saß Heli auf dem Sitze, nach der Straße ausschauend; denn sein Herz bangte um die Lade Gottes. Nachdem aber der Mann in die Stadt gekommen war, verkündete er daselbst, und die ganze Stadt wehklagte.

Als Heli das laute Geschrei hörte, sprach er: Was ist das für ein lautes Getümmel? Da kam der Mann eilends herzu und verkündete es Heli.

Heli aber war achtundneunzig Jahre alt, und seine Augen waren dunkel geworden, und er konnte nicht sehen.

Als jener nun zu Heli sprach: Ich bin der, welcher aus dem Kampfe gekommen ist, und ich bin es, der heute aus der Schlacht geflohen ist, sprach er zu ihm: Was hat sich begeben, mein Sohn?

Da antwortete der, welcher Nachricht brachte, und sprach: Israel ist von den Philistern geflohen und eine große Niederlage ist unter dem Volke angerichtet, überdies sind auch deine beiden Söhne Ophni und Phinees tot; und die Lade Gottes ist weggenommen.

Als jener die Lade Gottes nannte, fiel Heli rücklings vom Sitze neben dem Eingange und brach den Hals und starb. Denn er war ein alter Mann und hochbetagt; und er hatte Israel vierzig Jahre gerichtet.

Ichabod

Seine Schwiegertochter aber, das Weib des Phinees, war schwanger und nahe am Gebären. Als diese die Kunde vernahm, dass die Lade Gottes weggenommen und ihr Schwiegervater und ihr Mann tot seien, sank sie nieder und gebar; denn die Wehen überfielen sie plötzlich.

Da sie nun im Sterben lag, sprachen die Frauen, die um sie standen, zu ihr: Fürchte dich nicht; den du hast einen Sohn geboren! Sie aber antwortete nicht und merkte nicht darauf.

Und sie nannte den Knaben Ichabod, indem sie sprach: Hinweggenommen ist die Herrlichkeit von Israel! Weil die Lade Gottes weggenommen war, und wegen ihres Schwiegervaters und ihres Mannes;

und sie sprach: Hinweggenommen ist die Herrlichkeit von Israel! Weil die Lade Gottes genommen war.
