- Kapitel 9 -

Bacchides is sent again into Judea: Judas fights against him with eight hundred men and is slain. Jonathan succeeds him and revenges the murder of his brother John. He fights against Bacchides. Alcimus dies miserably. Bacchides besieges Bethbessen. He is forced to raise the siege and leave the country.

In the mean time when Demetrius heard that Nicanor and his army were fallen in battle, he sent again Bacchides and Alcimus into Judea; and the right wing of his army with them.

And they took the road that leadeth to Galgal, and they camped in Masaloth, which is in Arabella: and they made themselves masters of it, and slew many people.

In the first month of the hundred and fifty-second year they brought the army to Jerusalem:

And they arose, and went to Berea with twenty thousand men, and two thousand horsemen.

Now Judas had pitched his tents in Laisa, and three thousand chosen men with him:

And they saw the multitude of the army that they were many, and they were seized with great fear: and many withdrew themselves out of the camp, and there remained of them no more than eight hundred men.

And Judas saw that his army slipped away, and the battle pressed upon him, and his heart was cast down: because he had not time to gather them together, and he was discouraged.

Then he said to them that remained: Let us arise, and go against our enemies, if we may be able to fight against them.

But they dissuaded him, saying: We shall not be able, but let us save our lives now, and return to our brethren, and then we will fight against them: for we are but few.

Then Judas said: God forbid we should do this thing, and flee away from them: but if our time be come, let us die manfully for our brethren, and let us not stain our glory.

And the army removed out of the camp, and they stood over against them: and the horsemen were divided into two troops, and the slingers, and the archers went before the army, and they that were in the front were all men of valour.

And Bacchides was in the right wing, and the legion drew near on two sides, and they sounded the trumpets:

And they also were on Judas’ side, even they also cried out, and the earth shook at the noise of the armies: and the battle was fought from morning even unto the evening.

And Judas perceived that the stronger part of the army of Bacchides was on the right side, and all the stout of heart came together with him:

And the right wing was discomfited by them, and he pursued them even to the mount Azotus.

And they that were in the left wing saw that the right wing was discomfited, and they followed after Judas, and them that were with him, at their back:

And the battle was hard fought, and there fell many wounded of the one side and of the other.

And Judas was slain, and the rest fled away.

And Jonathan and Simon took Judas their brother, and buried him in the sepulchre of their fathers in the city of Modin.

And all the people of Israel bewailed him with great lamentation, and they mourned for him many days.

And said: How is the mighty man fallen, that saved the people of Israel!

But the rest of the words of the wars of Judas, and of the noble acts that he did, and of his greatness, are not written: for they were very many.

And it came to pass after the death of Judas, that the wicked began to put forth their heads in all the confines of Israel, and all the workers of iniquity rose up.

In those days there was a very great famine, and they and all their country yielded to Bacchides.

And Bacchides chose the wicked men, and made them lords of the country:

And they sought out, and made diligent search after the friends of Judas, and brought them to Bacchides, and he took vengeance of them, and abused them.

And there was a great tribulation in Israel, such as was not since the day, that there was no prophet seen in Israel.

And all the friends of Judas came together, and said to Jonathan:

Since thy brother Judas died, there is not a man like him to go forth against our enemies, Bacchides, and them that are the enemies of our nation.

Now therefore we have chosen thee this day to be our prince, and captain in his stead to fight our battles.

So Jonathan took upon him the government at that time, and rose up in the place of Judas his brother.

And Bacchides had knowledge of it, and sought to kill him.

And Jonathan and Simon his brother, knew it, and all that were with them: and they fled into the desert of Thecua, and they pitched by the water of the lake of Asphar,

And Bacchides understood it, and he came himself with all his army over the Jordan on the sabbath day.

And Jonathan sent his brother a captain of the people, to desire the Nabutheans his friends, that they would lend them their equipage, which was copious.

And the children of Jambri came forth out of Madaba, and took John, and all that he had, and went away with them.

After this it was told Jonathan, and Simon his brother, that the children of Jambri made a great marriage, and were bringing the bride out of Madaba, the daughter of one of the great princes of Chanaan, with great pomp.

And the remembered the blood of John their brother: and they went up, and hid themselves under the covert of the mountain.

And they lifted up their eyes, and saw: and behold a tumult, and great preparation: and the bridegroom came forth, and his friends, and his brethren to meet them with timbrels, and musical instruments, and many weapons.

And they rose up against them from the place where they lay in ambush, and slew them, and there fell many wounded, and the rest fled into the mountains, and they took all their spoils:

And the marriage was turned into mourning, and the noise of their musical instruments into lamentation.

And they took revenge for the blood of their brother: and they returned to the bank of the Jordan.

And Bacchides heard it, and he came on the sabbath day even to the bank of the Jordan with a great power.

And Jonathan said to his company: Let us arise, and fight against our enemies: for it is not now as yesterday, and the day before.

And behold the battle is before us, and the water of the Jordan on this side and on that side, and banks, and marshes, and woods: and there is no place for us to turn aside.

Now therefore cry ye to heaven, that ye may be delivered from the hand of your enemies. And they joined battle.

And Jonathan stretched forth his hand to strike Bacchides, but he turned away from him backwards.

And Jonathan, and they that were with him leaped into the Jordan, and swam over the Jordan to them:

And there fell of Bacchides’ side that day a thousand man: and they returned to Jerusalem,

And they built strong cities in Judea, the fortress that was in Jericho, and in Ammaus, and in Bethoron, and in Bethel, and Thamnata, and Phara, and Thopo, with high walls, and gates, and bars.

And he placed garrisons in them, that they might wage war against Israel:

And he fortified the city of Bethsura, and Gazara, and the castle, and set garrisons in them, and provisions of victuals:

And he took the sons of the chief men of the country for hostages, and put them in the castle in Jerusalem in custody.

Now in the year one hundred and fifty-three, the second month, Alcimus commanded the walls of the inner court of the sanctuary to be thrown down, and the works of the prophets to be destroyed: and he began to be destroyed: and he began to destroy.

At that time Alcimus was struck: and his works were hindered, and his mouth was stopped, and he was taken with a palsy, so that he could no more speak a word, nor give order concerning his house.

And Alcimus died at that time in great torment.

And Bacchides saw that Alcimus was dead: and he returned to the king, and the land was quiet for two years.

And all the wicked held a council, saying: Behold Jonathan, and they that are with him, dwell at ease, and without fear: now therefore let us bring Bacchides hither, and he shall take them all in one night.

So they went, and gave him counsel.

And he arose to come with a great army: and he sent secretly letters to his adherents that were in Judea, to seize upon Jonathan, and them that were with him: but they could not, for their design was known to them.

And he apprehended of the men of the country, that were the principal authors of the mischief, fifty men, and slew them.

And Jonathan, and Simon, and they that were with him retired into Bethbessen, which is in the desert: and he repaired the breaches thereof, and they fortified it.

And when Bacchides knew it, he gathered together all his multitude: and sent word to them that were of Judea.

And he came, and camped above Bethbessen, and fought against it many days, and made engines.

But Jonathan left his brother Simon in the city, and went forth into the country: and came with a number of men.

And struck Odares, and his brethren, and the children of Phaseron in their tents, and he began to slay, and to increase in forces.

But Simon and they that were with him, sallied out of the city, and burnt the engines.

And they fought against Bacchides, and he was discomfited by them: and they afflicted him exceedingly, for his counsel, and his enterprise was in vain.

And he was angry with the wicked men that had given him counsel to come into their country, and he slew many of them: and he purposed to return with the rest into their country.

And Jonathan had knowledge of it, and he sent ambassadors to him to make peace with him, and to restore to him the prisoners.

And he accepted it willingly, and did according to his words, and swore that the would do him no harm all the days of his life.

And he restored to him the prisoners which he before had taken out of the land of Juda: and he returned and went away into his own country, and he came no more into their borders.

So the sword ceased from Israel: and Jonathan dwelt in Machmas, and Jonathan began there to judge the people, and he destroyed the wicked out of Israel.

Bacchides wird wieder nach Judäa geschickt: Judas kämpft mit achthundert Mann gegen ihn und wird erschlagen. Jonathan tritt seine Nachfolge an und rächt den Mord an seinem Bruder Johannes. Er kämpft gegen Bacchides. Alcimus stirbt elendig. Bacchides belagert Bethbessen. Er wird gezwungen, die Belagerung aufzuheben und das Land zu verlassen

Inzwischen hörte Demetrius, dass Nikanor und sein Heer im Streite gefallen sei, und sandte Bacchides und Alkimus zum zweiten Male nach Judäa und den rechten Flügel mit ihnen.

Diese schlugen den Weg ein, der nach Galgala führt, und lagerten sich vor Masaloth, welches in Arbela liegt, und nahmen es ein und töteten viele Menschen.

Im ersten Monate des hundertzweiundfünfzigsten Jahres lagerten sie sich bei Jerusalem.

Doch brachen sie bald auf und zogen nach Berea, zwanzigtausend Mann zu Fuß und zweitausend Reiter.

Judas aber hatte sein Lager in Laisa aufgeschlagen und es waren bei ihm dreitausend auserlesene Männer.

Da diese nun sahen, wie stark das Heer war, dass sie sehr zahlreich seien, fürchteten sie sich sehr und viele verließen das Lager, so dass nur achthundert Mann übrigblieben.

Als Judas sah, dass sein Lager zusammengeschmolzen sei und dass er zum Kampfe gedrängt werde, ward er sehr bekümmert, denn er hatte nicht Zeit, sie wieder zu sammeln, und er war entmutigt.

Und er sprach zu den Übriggebliebenen: Auf, lasset uns unsern Widersachern entgegenziehen, ob wir sie etwa zu bekämpfen vermögen.

Diese aber suchten ihn davon abzubringen und sprachen: Wir vermögen es nicht, sondern lass uns jetzt unser eigenes Leben retten und zu unsern Brüdern zurückkehren, alsdann wollen wir wiederkommen und wider sie kämpfen; denn unser sind so wenig.

Judas sprach: Fern sei es von mir, das zu tun, dass wir vor ihnen fliehen sollten. Ist unsere Zeit gekommen, so lasset uns mannhaft für unsere Brüder sterben und keinen Flecken unserer Ehre anhängen!

So brach das Heer aus dem Lager auf und jene nahmen ihnen gegenüber Aufstellung, die Reiterei aber teilte sich in zwei Teile, die Schleuderer und die Bogenschützen zogen dem Heere voran und die Tapfersten standen in der vordersten Schlachtreihe.

Bacchides war auf den rechten Flügel und die Schlachtreihe rückte von beiden Seiten her vor, während die Trompeten schmetterten.

Auch die Leute des Judas stießen in die Trompeten, so dass die Erde vom Getöse der Heere bebte, und der Kampf begann und dauerte vom Morgen bis zum Abend.

Da nun Judas sah, dass der stärkere Teil des Heeres des Bacchides auf der rechten Seite war, sammelten sich alle die Mutigsten um ihn

und der rechte Flügel ward von ihnen geschlagen und er verfolgte sie bis an den Berg von Azot.

Als aber die, welche auf dem linken Flügel waren, sahen, dass der rechte Flügel geschlagen sei, fielen sie Judas und seinen Gefährten in den Rücken.

Da wurde der Kampf heftig und es fielen viele Erschlagene auf beiden Seiten.

Auch Judas fiel und die übrigen flohen.

Jonathas und Simon aber trugen ihren Bruder Judas hinweg und begruben ihn im Begräbnis ihrer Väter in der Stadt Modin.

Und das ganze Volk Israel beweinte ihn mit großer Wehklage und trauerte lange Zeit.

Und sie sprachen: Wie ist der Held gefallen, der Retter des Volkes Israel!

Die übrige Geschichte der Kämpfe Judas und der Großtaten, die er vollbracht, und seiner Größe ist nicht aufgeschrieben, denn es war desselben sehr viel.

Und es begab sich nach dem Tode des Judas, dass die Ruchlosen im ganzen Lande Israel sich erhoben und dass alle Übeltäter offen hervortraten.

In jener Zeit entstand eine sehr große Hungersnot und das ganze Land ergab sich mit ihnen an Bacchides.

Er aber erwählte gottlose Männer und setzte sie als Herren des Landes ein.

Diese suchten und forschten nach den Freunden des Judas und brachten diese vor Bacchides, der sich an ihnen rächte und sie verhöhnte.

Und es kam eine große Bedrängnis über Israel, dergleichen keine gewesen, seitdem kein Prophet mehr in Israel erschienen.

Da versammelten sich alle Freunde des Judas und sprachen zu Jonathas:

Seitdem dein Bruder Judas gestorben, ist kein Mann seinesgleichen da, der gegen unsere Feinde, gegen Bacchides und die, welche Feinde unseres Volkes sind, ausziehen möchte.

Darum haben wir dich heute erwählt, dass du an seiner Statt unser Oberhaupt und Anführer seiest, unsern Krieg zu führen.

Da übernahm Jonathas zu jener Zeit die Führerschaft und trat an seines Bruders Judas Stelle.

Als Bacchides dies erfuhr, suchte er ihn zu töten.

Aber Jonathas und sein Bruder Simon und alle, die bei ihm waren, erfuhren es und flohen in die Wüste Thekua und lagerten sich bei dem Wasser der Zisterne Asphar.

Dies erfuhr Bacchides und zog mit seinem ganzen Heere am Tage des Sabbats über den Jordan.

Jonathas nämlich hatte seinen Bruder als Anführer des Volkes abgesandt, um die Nabuthäer, seine Freunde, zu bitten, dass sie ihnen ihre Habe überlassen dürften, die sehr groß war.

Da zogen die Söhne Jambris aus Madaba aus und nahmen Johannes mit allem, was er hatte, gefangen und führten es mit sich fort.

Nach diesen Ereignissen war dem Jonathas und seinem Bruder Simon berichtet worden, dass die Söhne Jambris eine große Hochzeit feierten und als Braut die Tochter eines großen Fürsten Kanaans aus Madaba mit großem Gepränge heimholten.

Da gedachten sie des Blutes ihres Bruders Johannes und zogen hinauf und verbargen sich in einem Schlupfwinkel des Gebirges.

Und als sie ihre Augen erhoben und ausschauten, siehe, da war Lärm und großer Prunk; der Bräutigam kam mit seinen Freunden und Verwandten daher und zog jenen entgegen mit Pauken und Musikinstrumenten und vielen Waffen.

Da erhoben sie sich aus dem Hinterhalte und überfielen jene und schlugen sie, und viele fielen verwundet, indes die übrigen in das Gebirge flohen, und sie bemächtigten sich aller ihrer Beute.

So ward die Hochzeit in Trauer verwandelt und der Jubel ihrer Musik in Wehklage.

Nachdem sie so Rache genommen für das Blut ihres Bruders, kehrten sie an das Ufer des Jordans zurück.

Als Bacchides dies erfuhr, zog er an einem Sabbattage an das Ufer des Jordans mit großer Heeresmacht.

Da sprach Jonathas zu den Seinigen: Auf, lasset uns gegen unsere Feinde kämpfen, denn heute ist es nicht wie gestern und ehedem.

Denn seht, der Kampf droht uns, das Wasser des Jordans aber umgibt uns auf beiden Seiten, dazu die sumpfigen Ufer und der Wald, so ist kein Raum, um auszuweichen.

So rufet denn zum Himmel, dass ihr aus der Hand eurer Feinde errettet werdet! Und es kam zur Schlacht.

Da streckte Jonathas seine Hand aus, den Bacchides zu schlagen, doch dieser wich vor ihm zurück.

Jonathas aber sprang mit den Seinigen in den Jordan und sie durchschwammen den Jordan vor ihren Augen.

An jenem Tage fielen auf Bacchides Seite tausend Mann und sie kehrten nach Jerusalem zurück

und bauten feste Städte in Judäa, die Feste bei Jericho und Ammaus und Bethoron und Bethel und Thamnata und Phara und Thopo, mit hohen Mauern und Toren und Riegeln.

Und er legte Besatzungen hinein, um Israel zu befehden.

Auch befestigte er die Stadt Bethsura und Gazara und die Burg und legte Truppen in dieselben und versah sie mit Lebensmitteln.

Auch nahm er die Söhne der Vornehmsten im Lande zu Geiseln und setzte sie in die Burg zu Jerusalem in Gewahrsam.

Und im hundertunddreiundfünfzigsten Jahre im zweiten Monate befahl Alkimus, die Mauer des innern Vorhofes niederzureißen und das Werk der Propheten zu zerstören und er fing an, es abzubrechen.

Zu derselben Zeit ward Alkimus geschlagen, seinen Plänen ward ein Ziel gesetzt, sein Mund ward geschlossen und er ward gelähmt und konnte kein Wort mehr reden noch Verfügungen treffen über sein Haus.

So starb Alkimus zur selben Zeit unter großen Qualen.

Da nun Bacchides sah, dass Alkimus gestorben war, kehrte er zum Könige zurück und das Land hatte zwei Jahre Ruhe.

Alle Gottlosen aber hielten miteinander Rat und sprachen: Sehet, Jonathas und seine Genossen wohnen in Ruhe voll Zuversicht, so lasset uns nun Bacchides herbeiholen, dass er sie alle in einer Nacht gefangen nehme.

Sie zogen hin und hielten mit ihm Rat.

Da brach er auf, um mit großer Heeresmacht zu kommen, und sandte heimlich Briefe an seine Verbündeten in Judäa, dass sie den Jonathas und seine Gefährten gefangen nähmen. Aber sie vermochten es nicht, denn ihr Anschlag war jenen kund geworden.

Und er ergriff fünfzig von den Männern des Landes, den Anstiftern der Bosheit, und tötete sie.

Jonathas aber und Simon und ihre Genossen zogen sich nach Bethbessen in der Wüste zurück und sie erbauten den zerstörten Teil der Stadt und befestigten ihn.

Als Bacchides dies erfuhr, sammelte er sein ganzes Heer und bot auch die, welche von Judäa waren, auf.

Und er kam und belagerte Bethbessen und berannte es viele Tage lang und errichtete Maschinen.

Jonathas aber ließ seinen Bruder Simon in der Stadt zurück und zog in das offene Land und kam mit einer geringen Anzahl.

Er schlug Odaren samt dessen Brüdern und die Söhne Phaserons in ihren Gezelten und er begann, zu siegen und an Macht zu wachsen.

Simon aber machte mit seinen Genossen einen Ausfall aus der Stadt, verbrannte die Maschinen

und kämpfte gegen Bacchides und dieser ward von ihnen geschlagen und sie bedrängten ihn hart, denn sein Plan und sein Angriff war missglückt.

Da ergrimmte er über die ruchlosen Männer, welche ihm den Rat gegeben, in ihr Land zu kommen, und tötete viele aus ihnen; er selbst aber gedachte, mit den übrigen in sein Land abzuziehen.

Als Jonathas dies erfuhr, sandte er an ihn Gesandte, dass er mit ihm Frieden schließen und ihm die Gefangenen zurückgeben möchte.

Jener willigte gern ein und tat nach seinem Vorschlage und schwor, ihm kein Leid mehr zuzufügen sein Leben lang.

Alsdann gab er ihm die Gefangenen zurück, welche er früher aus dem Lande Juda weggeführt hatte, zog wieder in sein Land ab und kam nicht mehr in ihr Gebiet.

So hatte nun der Krieg für Israel ein Ende und Jonathas wohnte in Machmas und begann, daselbst das Volk zu richten und vertilgte die Gottlosen aus Israel.
