- Kapitel 21 -

(Isaiah 65:17–25)

I saw the new heaven and the new earth. For the first heaven and the first earth passed away, and the sea is no more.(a)

And I, John, saw the Holy City, the New Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God, prepared like a bride adorned for her husband.

And I heard a great voice from the throne, saying: “Behold the tabernacle of God with men. And he will dwell with them, and they will be his people. And God himself will be their God with them.

And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes. And death shall be no more. And neither mourning, nor crying out, nor grief shall be anymore. For the first things have passed away.”

And the One who was sitting upon the throne, said, “Behold, I make all things new.” And he said to me, “Write, for these words are entirely faithful and true.”

And he said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To those who thirst, I will give freely from the fountain of the water of life.

Whoever prevails shall possess these things. And I will be his God, and he shall be my son.

But the fearful, and the unbelieving, and the abominable, and murderers, and fornicators, and drug users, and idolaters, and all liars, these shall be a part of the pool burning with fire and sulphur, which is the second death.”

The New Jerusalem

And one of the seven Angels, those holding the bowls filled with the seven last afflictions, approached and spoke with me, saying: “Come, and I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”

And he took me up in spirit to a great and high mountain. And he showed me the Holy City Jerusalem, descending out of heaven from God,

having the glory of God. And its light was like that of a precious stone, even like that of the jasper stone or like crystal.

And it had a wall, great and high, having twelve gates. And at the gates were twelve Angels. And names were written upon them, which are the names of the twelve tribes of the sons of Israel.

On the East were three gates, and on the North were three gates, and on the South were three gates, and on the West were three gates.

And the wall of the City had twelve foundations. And upon them were the twelve names of the twelve Apostles of the Lamb.

And he who was speaking with me was holding a golden measuring reed, in order to measure the City, and its gates and wall.

And the city is laid out as a square, and so its length is as great as the width. And he measured the city with the golden reed for twelve thousand stadia, and its length and height and breadth were equal.(b)

And he measured its wall as one hundred and forty-four cubits, the measure of a man, which is of an Angel.(c)

And the structure of its wall was of jasper stone. Yet truly, the city itself was of pure gold, similar to pure glass.

And the foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with every kind of precious stone. The first foundation was of jasper, the second was of sapphire, the third was of chalcedony, the fourth was of emerald,

the fifth was of sardonyx, the sixth was of sardius, the seventh was of chrysolite, the eighth was of beryl, the ninth was of topaz, the tenth was of chrysoprasus, the eleventh was of jacinth, the twelfth was of amethyst.

And the twelve gates are twelve pearls, one for each, so that each gate was made from a single pearl. And the main street of the city was of pure gold, similar to transparent glass.

And I saw no temple in it. For the Lord God Almighty is its temple, and the Lamb.

And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine in it. For the glory of God has illuminated it, and the Lamb is its lamp.

And the nations shall walk by its light. And the kings of the earth shall bring their glory and honor into it.

And its gates shall not be closed throughout the day, for there shall be no night in that place.

And they shall bring the glory and honor of the nations into it.

There shall not enter into it anything defiled, nor anything causing an abomination, nor anything false, but only those who have been written in the Book of Life of the Lamb.

(b)21:16 There is some uncertainty about whether the city was 12 by 12 by 12, or 3 by 3 by 3. In my opinion, the 12 thousand stadia is related to the 12 sections of the wall, so the perimeter is 12 thousand stadia; this interpretation makes the latter part of the verse much more significant, in that it is needed to indicate that the length and height are equal (so 3 thousand stadia each), and that the height is therefore also 3 thousand stadia.(Conte)

Alle Dinge werden neu gemacht

(Jesaja 65,17-25)

Und ich sah einen neuen Himmel und eine neue Erde; denn der erste Himmel und die erste Erde sind vergangen, und das Meer ist nicht mehr.

Und ich, Johannes, sah die heilige Stadt, das neue Jerusalem, aus dem Himmel herabsteigen von Gott, zubereitet wie eine Braut für ihren Bräutigam geschmückt ist.

Und ich hörte eine starke Stimme vom Throne her sagen: Siehe, das Gezelt Gottes bei den Menschen! Er wird bei ihnen wohnen; und sie werden sein Volk sein, und er, Gott selbst, wird bei ihnen sein als ihr Gott.

Und Gott wird alle Tränen von ihren Augen trocknen, und der Tod wird nicht mehr sein, noch Trauer, noch Klage, noch Schmerz wird mehr sein; denn das Erste ist dahingegangen.

Und der auf dem Throne saß, sprach: Siehe, ich mache alles neu! Und er sprach zu mir: Schreibe, denn diese Worte sind zuverlässig und wahrhaftig.

Und er sprach zu mir: Es ist geschehen! ich bin das A und das O, der Anfang und das Ende. Ich werde dem Dürstenden aus der Quelle des Lebens Wasser umsonst geben.

Wer überwindet, soll dies ererben, und ich werde ihm Gott und er wird mir Sohn sein.

Den Feigen aber, und Ungläubigen, mit Greueln Befleckten, Mördern, Unzüchtigen, Zauberern, Götzendienern und allen Lügnern soll ihr Teil werden in dem Pfuhl, der von Feuer und Schwefel brennt: dies ist der zweite Tod.

Das neue Jerusalem

Und es kam einer der sieben Engel, welche die Schalen hatten, die voll waren von den sieben letzten Plagen, und redete mit mir und sagte: Komm, ich will dir die Braut zeigen, die Gemahlin des Lammes!

Und er führte mich im Geiste fort auf einen großen und hohen Berg und zeigte mir die heilige Stadt Jerusalem, wie sie von Gott aus dem Himmel herabstieg.

Sie hatte die Herrlichkeit Gottes, und ihr Glanz war gleich einem kostbaren Edelsteine, wie Jaspisstein, wie Kristall.

Sie hatte eine große, hohe Mauer mit zwölf Toren, und auf den Toren zwölf Engel, und Namen darauf geschrieben, welche die Namen der zwölf Stämme der Kinder Israels sind.

Nach Morgen drei Tore, nach Mitternacht drei Tore, nach Mittag drei Tore, nach Abend drei Tore.

Die Mauer der Stadt hatte zwölf Grundsteine, und auf ihnen die zwölf Namen der zwölf Apostel des Lammes.

Und der mit ihr redete, hatte ein goldenes Rohr, dass er die Stadt und ihre Tore und die Mauer messe.

Und die Stadt war in´s Gevierte gebaut, und ihre Länge so groß wie ihre Breite. Und er maß die Stadt mit dem goldenen Maßstabe auf zwölftausend Stadien; ihre Länge und die Höhe und die Breite sind gleich.

Und er maß ihre Mauer: hundert und vierundvierzig Ellen nach Menschenmaß, nach welchem die Engel sich richten.

Und das Bauwerk ihrer Mauer war aus Jaspis; die Stadt selbst aber reines Gold, ähnlich reinem Glase.

Die Grundsteine der Mauer der Stadt sind mit allerlei Edelsteinen geschmückt. Der erste Grundstein war ein Jaspis, der zweite ein Saphir, der dritte ein Chalcedon, der vierte ein Smaragd,

der fünfte ein Sardonyx, der sechste ein Sardis, der siebente ein Chrysolith, der achte ein Beryll, der neunte ein Topas, der zehnte ein Chrysopras, der elfte ein Hyacinth, der zwölfte ein Amethyst.

Und die zwölf Tore sind zwölf Perlen, jedes Tor war aus einer einzigen Perle; und die Straßen der Stadt reines Gold, durchsichtig wie Kristall.

Die Herrlichkeit des neuen Jerusalems

Einen Tempel sah ich nicht in ihr; denn der Herr, der allmächtige Gott, ist ihr Tempel, und das Lamm.

Und die Stadt bedarf nicht der Sonne, noch des Mondes, dass sie in ihr scheinen, denn die Herrlichkeit Gottes hat sie erleuchtet, und ihre Leuchte ist das Lamm.

Und die Völker werden in ihrem Lichte wandeln; und die Könige der Erde werden ihre Herrlichkeit und Ehre zu ihr bringen.

Und ihre Tore werden nicht geschlossen werden am Tage; denn Nacht wird daselbst nicht sein.

Und man wird die Herrlichkeit und die Ehre der Völker zu derselben bringen.

Nichts Unreines wird in sie eingehen, noch wer Greuel übt und Lüge, sondern nur die, welche im Lebensbuche des Lammes geschrieben sind.
