- Kapitel 13 -

Saul was thirty years old

(a)

when he became king, and he reigned over Israel forty-two years.(b)

He chose for himself three thousand men of Israel: Two thousand were with Saul at Michmash and in the hill country of Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin. And the rest of the troops he sent away, each to his own home.

Then Jonathan attacked the Philistine outpost at Geba, and the Philistines heard about it. So Saul blew the ram’s horn throughout the land, saying, “Let the Hebrews hear!”

And all Israel heard the news: “Saul has attacked an outpost of the Philistines, and now Israel has become a stench to the Philistines!” Then the people were summoned to join Saul at Gilgal.

Now the Philistines assembled to fight against Israel with three thousand (c) chariots, six thousand horsemen, and troops as numerous as the sand on the seashore. They went up and camped at Michmash, east of Beth-aven.

Seeing that they were in danger because their troops were hard-pressed, the men of Israel hid in caves and thickets, among the rocks, and in cellars and cisterns.

Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan into the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul, however, remained at Gilgal, and all his troops were quaking in fear.

Saul’s Unlawful Sacrifice

And Saul waited seven days for the time appointed by Samuel, but Samuel did not come to Gilgal, and the troops began to desert Saul.

So he said, “Bring me the burnt offering and the peace offerings.” And he offered up the burnt offering.

Just as he finished offering the burnt offering, Samuel arrived, and Saul went out to greet him.

“What have you done?” Samuel asked. And Saul replied, “When I saw that the troops were deserting me, and that you did not come at the appointed time and the Philistines were gathering at Michmash,

I thought, ‘Now the Philistines will descend upon me at Gilgal, and I have not sought the favor of the LORD.’ So I felt compelled to offer the burnt offering.”

“You have acted foolishly,” Samuel declared. “You have not kept the command that the LORD your God gave you; if you had, the LORD would have established your kingdom over Israel for all time.

But now your kingdom will not endure; the LORD has sought a man after His own heart and appointed him ruler over His people, because you have not kept the command of the LORD.”

Then Samuel set out from Gilgal and went up to Gibeah in Benjamin.(d) And Saul numbered the troops who were with him, about six hundred men.

Israel without Weapons

Now Saul and Jonathan his son and the troops with them were staying in Geba of Benjamin, while the Philistines camped at Michmash.

And raiders went out of the Philistine camp in three divisions. One headed toward Ophrah in the land of Shual,

another toward Beth-horon, and the third down the border road overlooking the Valley of Zeboim facing the wilderness.

And no blacksmith could be found in all the land of Israel, because the Philistines had said, “The Hebrews must not be allowed to make swords or spears.”

Instead, all the Israelites would go down to the Philistines to sharpen their plowshares, mattocks, axes, and sickles.(e)

The charge was a pim (f) for sharpening a plowshare or mattock, a third of a shekel for sharpening a pitchfork or an axe, and a third of a shekel for repointing an oxgoad.(g)

So on the day of battle not a sword or spear could be found in the hands of the troops with Saul and Jonathan; only Saul and his son Jonathan had weapons.

And a garrison of the Philistines had gone out to the pass at Michmash.

Sauls unrechtmäßiges Opfer

Ein Jahr war es, seitdem Saul König geworden, und er herrschte das zweite Jahr über Israel,

da erwählte sich Saul dreitausend Mann aus Israel; zweitausend davon waren bei Saul in Machmas und auf dem Berge Bethel, und tausend bei Jonathas in Gabaa Benjamin; das übrige Volk aber ließ er einen jeden in seine Hütte zurückkehren.

Da schlug Jonathas die Besatzung der Philister, welche in Gabaa stand. Als dies die Philister hörten, ließ Saul im ganzen Lande die Posaune blasen und sagen: Die Hebräer mögen hören!

Und ganz Israel hörte eine solche Kunde: Saul hat die Besatzung der Philister geschlagen, und Israel hat sich gegen die Philister erhoben. Darum rief das Volk Saul zu in Galgala.

Die Philister aber sammelten sich zum Kampfe gegen Israel, dreißigtausend Wagen und sechstausend Reiter stark, und das übrige Kriegsvolk, so zahlreich wie der Sand am Ufer des Meeres. Und sie zogen heran und lagerten sich in Machmas im Osten von Bethaven.

Als nun die Männer von Israel sahen, dass sie in die Enge gebracht seien (denn das Volk war bedrängt), verbargen sie sich in Klüften und Verstecken, in Felsen und Höhlen und Zisternen.

Die Hebräer aber zogen über den Jordan in das Land Gad und Galaad. Als Saul nun noch in Galgala war, geriet das ganze Volk, welches ihm folgte, in Schrecken.

Und er wartete nach Samuels Anordnung sieben Tage; aber Samuel kam nicht nach Galgala, und das Volk verlief sich von ihm.

Deshalb sprach Saul: Bringet mir das Brandopfer und die Friedopfer her! Und er brachte das Brandopfer dar.

Als er nun die Darbringung des Brandopfers vollendet hatte, siehe, da kam Samuel; und Saul ging ihm entgegen, um ihn zu begrüßen.

Samuel aber sprach zu ihm: Was hast du getan? Saul antwortete: Weil ich sah, dass das Volk sich von mir verlief und du an den bestimmten Tagen nicht gekommen warst, die Philister sich zudem in Machmas versammelt hatten,

sprach ich: Nun werden die Philister gegen mich nach Galgala herabziehen, und ich habe das Angesicht des Herrn noch nicht versöhnt. Durch die Not gedrungen, habe ich das Brandopfer dargebracht.

Da sprach Samuel zu Saul: Du hast töricht gehandelt und die Gebote des Herrn, deines Gottes, die er dir gegeben, nicht gehalten. Hättest du das nicht getan, so hättet der Herr dein Königtum über Israel jetzt schon auf immer bestätigt.

So aber wird dein Königtum fürderhin nicht Bestand haben. Der Herr hat sich einen Mann nach seinem Herzen gesucht, und der Herr hat ihm geboten, Fürst zu sein über sein Volk, weil du nicht gehalten hast, was der Herr geboten hatte.

Und Samuel machte sich auf und ging von Galgala nach Gabaa Benjamin hinauf. Das übrige Volk aber zog hinauf, Saul nach, dem Kriegsvolke entgegen, welches gegen sie auf dem Hügel Benjamin anrückte, da sie von Galgala nach Gabaa zogen. Und Saul musterte das Volk, das sich bei ihm fand, etwa sechshundert Mann.

Keine Waffen für die Armee

Saul und sein Sohn Jonathas, und das Volk, das sich bei ihnen befand, waren zu Gabaa Benjamin: die Philister aber hatten sich in Machmas gelagert.

Da zogen aus dem Lager der Philister drei Haufen auf Plünderung aus; ein Hause zog auf dem Wege nach Ephra nach dem Lande Sual;

der zweite schlug den Weg nach Bethhoron ein; der dritte aber wandte sich auf die Straße nach der Grenze, die sich an das Tal Seboim nach der Wüste zu ausdehnt.

Es war aber im ganzen Lande Israel kein Schmied zu finden; denn die Philister hatten es verhindert, dass die Hebräer sich Schwerter oder Lanzen machten.

Darum ging ganz Israel zu den Philistern hinab, wenn jemand seine Pflugschar, seine Hacke, sein Beil, oder seinen Spaten schärfen lassen wollte.

Die Schneiden der Pflugscharen, der Haken, Gabeln und Beile waren deshalb stumpf, und auch die Ochsenstacheln bedurften der Zuspitzung.

Als nun der Tag des Kampfes kam, war kein Schwert und keine Lanze in der Hand des ganzen Volkes zu finden, das mit Saul und Jonathas war, ausgenommen in der Hand Sauls und Jonathas, seines Sohnes.

Die Besatzung der Philister aber rückte vor, um nach Machmas hinüberzuziehen.
