And having called together His twelve disciples, He gave them power and authority over all the demons, and to cure diseases,

and He sent them to proclaim the Kingdom of God, and to heal the ailing.

And He said to them, “Take nothing for the way, neither staff, nor leather pouch, nor bread, nor money; neither have two coats each;
4
and into whatever house you may enter, remain there, and depart from there;
5
and as many as may not receive you, going forth from that city, even the dust from your feet shake off, for a testimony against them.”

And going forth they were going through the several villages, proclaiming good news, and healing everywhere.

Herod Tries to See Jesus

(Matthew 14:1–12; Mark 6:14–29)

And Herod the tetrarch heard of all the things being done by Him, and was perplexed, because it was said by some that John has been raised out of the dead,

and by some that Elijah appeared, and by others, that a prophet, one of the ancients, was risen;

and Herod said, “I beheaded John, but who is this concerning whom I hear such things?” And he was seeking to see Him.

The Feeding of the Five Thousand

And the apostles having turned back, declared to Him how they did great things, and having taken them, He withdrew by Himself into a city called Bethsaida,

for they were about five thousand men. And He said to His disciples, “Cause them to recline in companies, in each fifty”;

and they did so, and made all to recline;

and having taken the five loaves and the two fishes, having looked up to the sky, He blessed them, and broke, and was giving to the disciples to set before the multitude;
17
and they ate, and were all filled, and there was taken up what was over to them of broken pieces, twelve baskets.

Peter’s Confession of Christ

And it came to pass, as He is praying alone, the disciples were with Him, and He questioned them, saying, “Who do the multitudes say I am?”

And they answering said, “John the Immerser; and others, Elijah; and others, that a prophet, one of the ancients, was risen”;

and He said to them, “And you—who do you say I am?” And Peter answering said, “The Christ of God.”

Christ’s Passion Foretold

Take Up Your Cross

And He said to all, “If anyone wills to come after Me, let him disown himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow Me;

for whoever may will to save his life will lose it, and whoever may lose his life for My sake, he will save it;

for what is a man profited, having gained the whole world, and having lost or having forfeited himself?

For whoever may be ashamed of Me and of My words, of this one will the Son of Man be ashamed when He may come in His glory, and the Father’s, and the holy messengers’;

and I say to you, truly, there are certain of those standing here who will not taste of death until they may see the Kingdom of God.”

The Transfiguration

And it came to pass, after these words, as it were eight days, that having taken Peter, and John, and James, He went up to the mountain to pray,

and it came to pass, in His praying, the appearance of His face became altered, and His clothing became flashing white.

And behold, two men were speaking together with Him, who were Moses and Elijah,

who having appeared in glory, spoke of His outgoing that He was about to fulfill in Jerusalem,
32
but Peter and those with him were heavy with sleep, and having awoken, they saw His glory, and the two men standing with Him.

And it came to pass, in their parting from Him, Peter said to Jesus, “Master, it is good to us to be here; and we may make three shelters: one for You, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah,” not knowing what he says:

and as he was speaking these things, there came a cloud, and overshadowed them, and they feared in their entering into the cloud,

and a voice came out of the cloud, saying, “This is My Son, the Beloved; hear Him”;
36
and when the voice was past, Jesus was found alone; and they were silent, and declared to no one in those days anything of what they have seen.

The Boy with an Evil Spirit

(Matthew 17:14–18; Mark 9:14–29)

And it came to pass on the next day, they having come down from the mountain, a great multitude met Him there,

and behold, a man from the multitude cried out, saying, “Teacher, I implore You, look on my son, because he is my only begotten;

and behold, a spirit takes him, and suddenly he cries out, and it convulses him, with foaming, and it hardly departs from him, bruising him,
40
and I implored Your disciples that they might cast it out, and they were not able.”
41
And Jesus answering said, “O generation, unsteadfast and perverse, until when will I be with you, and endure you? Bring your son near here”;
42
and as he is yet coming near, the demon threw him down, and convulsed [him], and Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the youth, and gave him back to his father.

The Second Prediction of the Passion

(Matthew 17:22–23; Mark 9:30–32)

And they were all amazed at the greatness of God, and while all are wondering at all things that Jesus did, He said to His disciples,

“Lay to your ears these words, for the Son of Man is about to be delivered up into the hands of men.”

And they were not knowing this saying, and it was veiled from them, that they might not perceive it, and they were afraid to ask Him about this saying.

The Greatest in the Kingdom

(Matthew 18:1–5; Mark 9:33–41)

And there entered a reasoning among them, this—who may be greater of them.

And Jesus having seen the reasoning of their heart, having taken hold of a child, set him beside Him,

and said to them, “Whoever may receive this child in My Name, receives Me, and whoever may receive Me, receives Him who sent Me, for he who is least among you all—he will be great.”

And John answering said, “Master, we saw a certain one casting forth the demons in Your Name, and we forbade him, because he does not follow with us”;

and Jesus said to him, “Do not forbid, for he who is not against us, is for us.”

The Samaritans Reject Jesus

And it came to pass, in the completing of the days of His being taken up, that He fixed His face to go on to Jerusalem,

and He sent messengers before His face, and having gone on, they went into a village of Samaritans, to make ready for Him,
53
and they did not receive Him, because His face was going on to Jerusalem.

And His disciples James and John having seen, said, “Lord, will You [that] we may command fire to come down from Heaven, and to consume them, as Elijah also did?”

And having turned, He rebuked them and said, “You have not known of what spirit you are,
56
for the Son of Man did not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save”; and they went on to another village.

The Cost of Discipleship

And it came to pass, as they are going on in the way, a certain one said to Him, “I will follow You wherever You may go, Lord”;

and Jesus said to him, “The foxes have holes, and the birds of the sky places of rest, but the Son of Man has nowhere He may recline the head.”

And He said to another, “Follow Me”; and he said, “Lord, permit me, having gone away, to first bury my father”;

and Jesus said to him, “Permit the dead to bury their own dead, and you, having gone away, publish the Kingdom of God.”

and Jesus said to him, “No one having put his hand on a plow, and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.”

Und er sandte sie aus, das Reich Gottes zu predigen, und die Kranken zu heilen.

Und er sprach zu ihnen: Nehmet nichts mit auf den Weg, weder Stab, noch Tasche, noch Brot, noch Geld, auch sollt ihr nicht zwei Röcke haben.

Und wo ihr immer in ein Haus eingetreten seid, daselbst bleibet, und gehet von da nicht hinweg.
5
Und wenn man euch nicht aufnimmt, so gehet fort aus jener Stadt, und schüttelt sogar den Staub von euren Füßen, zum Zeugnisse über sie.

Da gingen sie aus, und zogen umher durch die Flecken, und predigten die frohe Botschaft, und heilten allenthalben.

Herodes will Jesus sehen

Es hörte aber Herodes, der Vierfürst, alles, was von ihm geschah, und er geriet in Unruhe, weil einige sagten:

Johannes ist von den Toten auferstanden; und andere: Elias ist erschienen; und wieder andere: Einer von den alten Propheten ist auferstanden.

Und Herodes sprach: Den Johannes habe ich enthaupten lassen; wer ist aber dieser, von dem ich solche Dinge höre? Und er suchte, ihn zu sehen.

Die Speisung der Fünftausend

Und die Apostel kehrten zurück, und erzählten ihm alles, was sie getan hatten. Und er nahm sie zu sich, und ging mit ihnen abseits an einen einsamen Ort, der bei Bethsaida ist.

Als die Scharen das erfuhren, folgten sie ihm; und er nahm sie auf, redete zu ihnen vom Reiche Gottes, und machte die, welche der Heilung bedürftig waren, gesund.

Der Tag aber fing an, sich zu neigen. Da traten die Zwölf hinzu, und sprachen zu ihm: Entlasse das Volk, damit es in die umliegenden Flecken und Dörfer hingehe, und Herberge und Speise finde; denn hier sind wir an einem öden Orte.

Er aber sprach zu ihnen: Gebet ihr ihnen zu essen! Sie sprachen: Wir haben nichts als fünf Brote und zwei Fische; es wäre denn, dass wir gehen, und für dies ganze Volk Speise kaufen sollen.

Es waren nämlich bei fünftausend Männer. Da sprach er zu seinen Jüngern: Lasset sie nach Abteilungen sich lagern, je fünfzig zusammen.
15
Und sie taten so, und ließen alle sich lagern.
16
Da nahm er die fünf Brote und die zwei Fische, blickte zum Himmel auf, segnete sie, brach sie, und gab sie seinen Jüngern, dass sie dem Volk vorlegten.

Und sie aßen alle, und wurden satt; und man hob auf, was ihnen übrig blieb, zwölf Körbe voll Stücklein.

Petrus bekennt Jesus als den Christus

Und es geschah, dass er allein war, und betete, waren auch seine Jünger bei ihm; und er fragte sie, und sprach: Wer sagen die Leute, dass ich sei?

Sie aber antworteten, und sprachen: Einige Johannes, der Täufer; andere Elias; und wieder andere: Einer der alten Propheten ist auferstanden.

Da sprach er zu ihnen: Ihr aber, wer sagt ihr, dass ich sei? Da antwortete Simon Petrus, und sprach: Der Gesalbte Gottes.

Jesus sagt seinen Tod und seine Auferstehung voraus

Er aber mahnte sie streng, und gebot ihnen, dies niemanden zu sagen;

denn, sprach er, der Menschensohn muss vieles leiden, von den Ältesten, Hohenpriestern und Schriftgelehrten verworfen und getötet werden, und am dritten Tage auferstehen.

Nehmt das Kreuz auf euch und folgt ihm nach

Zu allen aber sagte er. Will mir jemand nachfolgen, so verleugne er sich selbst, nehme täglich sein Kreuz auf sich, und folge mir.

Denn wer sein Leben retten will, wird es verlieren; aber wer sein Leben um meinetwillen verliert, wird es retten.

Denn was nützt es dem Menschen, wenn er die ganze Welt gewinnt, sich selbst aber verliert und an sich Schaden leidet?

Denn wer sich meiner und meiner Worte schämt, dessen wird der Menschensohn sich schämen, wenn er kommen wird in seiner und des Vaters und der heiligen Engel Herrlichkeit.

Wahrlich, ich sage euch, es sind einige von denen, die hier stehen, welche den Tod nicht kosten werden, bis sie das Reich Gottes sehen!

Jesus verklärt auf dem Berg

Es geschah aber ungefähr acht Tage nach diesen Reden, da nahm er Petrus, Jakobus und Johannes zu sich, und stieg auf den Berg, um zu beten.

Und während er betete, ward das Aussehen seines Angesichtes ein anderes, und sein Gewand weiß und strahlend.

Und siehe, zwei Männer redeten mit ihm, Moses nämlich und Elias,

welche in Herrlichkeit erschienen; und sie sprachen von seinem Ausgange, den er zu Jerusalem vollenden sollte.

Petrus aber, und die bei ihm waren, wurden vom Schlafe beschwert; und da sie aufwachten, sahen sie seine Herrlichkeit, und die zwei Männer, die bei ihm standen.

Und es geschah, als sie von ihm schieden, sprach Petrus zu Jesus: Meister! Hier ist gut sein für uns; lass uns drei Hütten bauen, eine Dir, eine Moses, und eine Elias; und er wusste nicht, was er sagte.

Indem er dies aber sagte, kam eine Wolke, und überschattete sie; und sie fürchteten sich, als jene in die Wolke hineingingen.

Und eine Stimme erscholl aus der Wolke, die sprach: Dieser ist mein geliebter Sohn, ihn höret!

Und als die Stimme erscholl, befand sich Jesus allein. Und sie schwiegen, und sagten in jenen Tagen niemanden etwas von dem, was sie gesehen hatten.

Ein Junge wird geheilt

Es geschah aber am folgenden Tage, als sie von dem Berge herabstiegen, kam ihnen viel Volk entgegen.

Und siehe, ein Mann aus dem Volke rief laut, und sprach: Meister! Ich bitte dich, siehe meinen Sohn an, denn er ist mein einziges Kind.

Und siehe, ein Geist ergreift ihn, sofort schreit er; er wirft und reißt ihn hin und her, dass er schäumt, und weicht auch dann kaum, wenn er ihn zerschlägt.

Ich habe deine Jünger gebeten, dass sie ihn austreiben möchten, aber sie konnten es nicht.

Da antwortete Jesus, und sprach: O du ungläubiges und verkehrtes Geschlecht! Wie lange werde ich noch bei euch sein, und euch dulden? Bringe deinen Sohn hierher!

Als er nun hinzutrat, warf ihn der böse Geist nieder, und schüttelte ihn.

Jesus sagt erneut seinen Tod voraus

Jesus aber bedrohte den unreinen Geist, heilte den Knaben, und gab ihn seinem Vater wieder.

Da erstaunten alle über die Größe Gottes. Als aber alle sich wunderten über alles, was er getan, sprach er zu seinen Jüngern: Nehmet diese Reden wohl zu Herzen! Der Menschensohn nämlich wird in die Hände der Menschen überliefert werden.

Sie aber verstanden dieses Wort nicht, und es war vor ihnen verhüllt, so dass sie es nicht begriffen; auch fürchteten sie sich, ich über diese Rede zu fragen.

Wer ist der Größte?

(Matthäus 18,1-5; Markus 9,33-41)

Es kam ihnen auch in den Sinn, wer der Größte von ihnen wäre.

Da aber Jesus die Gedanken ihres Herzens sah, nahm er ein Kind, stellte es neben sich,

und sprach zu ihnen: Wer immer ein solches Kind aufnimmt in meinem Namen, der nimmt mich auf; und wer immer mich aufnimmt, nimmt den auf, der mich gesandt hat. Denn wer der Kleinste unter euch allen ist, dieser ist der Größte.

Jesus verbietet Sektierertum

Johannes aber hob an, und sprach: Meister! Wir sahen einen, der in deinem Namen böse Geister austrieb, und wir wehrten es ihm, weil er dir nicht mit uns folgt.

Und Jesus sprach zu ihm: Wehret es nicht! Denn wer nicht wider euch ist, der ist für euch.

Ein samaritanisches Dorf lehnt den Erlöser ab

Es geschah aber, indes die Tage seiner Aufnahme der Erfüllung nahten, wandte er sein Angesicht, um sich nach Jerusalem zu begeben.

Und er schickte Boten vor sich her. Und sie gingen hin, und kamen in eine Stadt der Samariter, um für seine Aufnahme alles vorzubereiten.

Sie aber nahmen ihn nicht auf, weil sein Angesicht zum Gange nach Jerusalem gerichtet war.

Als dieses seine Jünger, Johannes und Jakobus, sahen, sprachen sie: Herr! Willst du, so sagen wir, dass Feuer vom Himmel falle, und sie verzehre?

Er aber wandte sich um, verwies es ihnen, und sprach: Ihr wisset nicht, wessen Geistes ihr seid!

Der Menschensohn ist nicht gekommen, Seelen zu verderben, sondern selig zu machen. Und sie gingen in einen anderen Flecken.

Der Preis der Jüngerschaft

Es geschah aber, als sie auf dem Wege dahingingen, sprach einer zu ihm: Ich werde dir folgen, wohin du immer gehest.

Jesus sprach zu ihm: Die Füchse haben Höhlen, und die Vögel des Himmels Nester; aber der Menschensohn hat nicht, wo er sein Haupt hinlege.

Zu einem andern aber sprach er: Folge mir nach! Und dieser sprach: Herr! Erlaube mir, zuvor hinzugehen, und meinen Vater zu begraben.

Jesus aber sprach zu ihm: Lass die Toten ihre Toten begraben; du aber gehe hin, und verkünde das Reich Gottes!

Und ein anderer sprach: Herr! Ich werde dir nachfolgen, aber erlaube mir zuvor, von dem, was zu Hause ist, Abschied zu nehmen.

Jesus sprach zu ihm: Niemand, der seine Hand an den Pflug legt, und zurücksieht, ist tauglich für das Reich Gottes.
