Conspiracy against Nehemiah

And when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and Geshem the Arabian, and the rest of our enemies heard that I had built the wall, and that there were no more breaches therein, (though at that time I had not set vp the doores vpon the gates)

Then sent Sanballat and Geshem vnto me, saying, Come thou that we may meete together in the villages in the plaine of Ono: and they thought to doe me euill.

Therefore I sent messengers vnto them, saying, I haue a great worke to doe, and I can not come downe: why should the worke cease, whiles I leaue it, and come downe to you?

Yet they sent vnto me foure times after this sort. And I answered them after the same maner.

Then sent Sanballat his seruant after this sorte vnto me the fift time, with an open letter in his hand,

Wherein was written, It is reported among the heathen, and Gashmu hath sayd it, that thou and the Iewes thinke to rebel, for the which cause thou buildest the wall and thou wilt bee their King according to these wordes.

Thou hast also ordeyned the Prophets to preach of thee at Ierusalem, saying, There is a King in Iudah: and nowe according to these wordes it shall come to the Kings eares: come now therefore, and let vs take counsell together.

Then I sent vnto him, saying, It is not done according to these wordes that thou sayest: for thou feynest them of thine owne heart.

For all they afrayed vs, saying, Their handes shalbe weakened from the worke, and it shall not be done: nowe therefore incourage thou me.

And I came to the house of Shemaiah the sonne of Delaiah the sonne of Mehetabeel, and he was shut vp, and he said, Let vs come together into the house of God in the middes of the Temple, and shut the doores of the Temple: for they will come to slay thee: yea, in the night will they come to kill thee.

Then I said, Should such a man as I, flee? Who is he, being as I am, that would go into the Temple to liue? I will not goe in.

And loe, I perceiued, that God had not sent him, but that he pronounced this prophecie against me: for Tobiah and Sanballat had hired him.

Therefore was he hyred, that I might be afrayde, and doe thus, and sinne, and that they might haue an euill report that they might reproche me.

My God, remember thou Tobiah, and Sanballat according vnto these their workes, and Noadiah the Prophetesse also, and the rest of the Prophets that would haue put me in feare.

The wall is finished

Notwithstanding the wall was finished on the fiue and twentieth day of Elul, in two and fiftie dayes.

And when all our enemies heard thereof, euen all the heathen that were about vs, they were afraid, and their courage failed them: for they knew, that this worke was wrought by our God.

And in these dayes were there many of the princes of Iudah, whose letters went vnto Tobiah, and those of Tobiah came vnto them.

For there were many in Iudah, that were sworne vnto him: for he was the sonne in lawe of Shechaniah, the sonne of Arah: and his sonne Iehonathan had the daughter of Meshullam, the sonne of Berechiah.

Yea, they spake in his praise before me, and tolde him my wordes, and Tobiah sent letters to put me in feare.

Verschwörung gegen Nehemia

Es begab sich aber, als Sanaballat und Tobias und Gossem, der Araber, und unsere übrigen Feinde hörten, dass ich die Mauer aufgebaut habe und dass keine Lücke mehr darin sei (doch hatte ich bis zu der Zeit die Pforten noch nicht in die Tore eingesetzt),

sandten Sanaballat und Gossem zu mir und ließen sagen: Komm und lass uns in den Dörfern in der Ebene Ono einen Bund miteinander schließen. Sie dachten aber, mir Böses zu tun.

Ich sandte also Boten zu ihnen und antwortete: Ich habe ein großes Werk zu vollbringen und kann nicht hinabkommen, damit es nicht etwa vernachlässigt werde, wenn ich gehe und zu euch hinabziehe.

Da sandten sie wohl viermal zu mir mit der gleichen Aufforderung, ich aber antwortete ihnen wie zuvor.

Da sandte Sanaballat seine Diener zum fünften Male an mich mit dem früheren Ansinnen, der Diener hatte einen Brief, in dem geschrieben stand:

Es geht das Gerücht unter den Völkern und Gossem sagt, dass ihr, du und die Juden, euch zu empören gedenkt und dass du darum die Mauer bauest und dich über sie zum Könige erheben wollest; deshalb

habest du auch Propheten bestellt, die von dir in Jerusalem ausrufen und sagen sollen: Es ist ein König in Judäa! Diese Reden werden dem Könige zu Ohren kommen; darum komm jetzt, dass wir mit einander eine Beratung halten.

Doch ich sandte zu ihnen und ließ ihnen sagen: Nichts derartiges ist geschehen, wie du sagst, denn aus deinem Herzen erdichtest du dies.

Diese alle nämlich suchten uns zu schrecken, indem sie dachten, unsere Hände würden von der Arbeit ablassen und wir würden einhalten. Darum stärkte ich meine Hände noch mehr.

Und ich ging heimlich in das Haus Semajas, des Sohnes Dalajas, des Sohnes Metabeels. Dieser sprach: Lass uns im Hause Gottes im Innern des Tempels zusammenkommen und die Türen des Gotteshauses schließen; denn man wird kommen, dich zu töten, und zwar wird man des Nachts kommen, dich zu ermorden.

Ich sprach: Flieht etwa ein Mann wie ich? Und wer meinesgleichen dürfte den Tempel betreten und am Leben bleiben? Ich werde denselben nicht betreten!

Und ich erkannte, dass Gott ihn nicht gesandt hatte, sondern dass er nur zu mir gesprochen, wie wenn er weissagte, und dass Tobias und Sanaballat ihn gedungen hatten.

Er hatte nämlich Geld angenommen, dass ich aus Furcht handeln oder sündigen sollte und sie etwas Böses hätten, das sie mir vorwerfen könnten.

Gedenke meiner, Herr! wegen Tobias und Sanaballats, nach diesen ihren Taten, und der Prophetin Noadia und der übrigen Propheten, die mich zu schrecken suchten.

Die Mauer ist fertiggestellt

Die Mauer aber wurde fertig am fünfundzwanzigsten Tage des Monats Elul, nach zweiundfünfzig Tagen.

Als nun alle unsere Feinde dies hörten, geschah es, dass alle Völker rings um uns her in Furcht gerieten und verzagt wurden und erkannten, dass dieses Werk von Gott ausgeführt war.

In diesen Tagen wurden auch viele Briefe von angesehenen Juden an Tobias gesendet und kamen von Tobias solche an sie;

denn es waren viele in Judäa, die sich ihm durch einen Eidschwur zugesellt hatten, weil er der Tochtermann Sechenias, des Sohnes des Areas, war und sein Sohn Johanan die Tochter Mosollams, des Sohnes Barachias, zur Frau genommen hatte;

ja, sie lobten sich sogar vor mir und hinterbrachten ihm meine Worte, und Tobias sandte Briefe, mir Furcht einzujagen.
