- Kapitel 20 -

Afterward Abraham departed thence toward the South countrey and dwelled betweene Cadesh and Shur, and soiourned in Gerar.

And Abraham said of Sarah his wife, She is my sister. Then Abimelech King of Gerar sent and tooke Sarah.

But God came to Abimelech in a dreame by night, and said to him, Beholde, thou art but dead, because of the woman, which thou hast taken: for she is a mans wife.

(Notwithstanding Abimelech had not yet come neere her) And he said, Lord, wilt thou slay euen the righteous nation?

Said not he vnto me, She is my sister? yea, and she her selfe said, He is my brother: with an vpright minde, and innocent handes haue I done this.

And God saide vnto him by a dreame, I knowe that thou diddest this euen with an vpright minde, and I kept thee also that thou shouldest not sinne against me: therefore suffered I thee not to touche her.

Now then deliuer the man his wife againe: for he is a Prophet, and he shall pray for thee that thou mayest liue: but if thou deliuer her not againe, be sure that thou shalt die the death, thou, and all that thou hast.

Then Abimelech rising vp early in ye morning, called all his seruants, and tolde all these things vnto them, and the men were sore afraid.

Afterward Abimelech called Abraham, and said vnto him, What hast thou done vnto vs? and what haue I offeded thee, that thou hast brought on me and on my kingdome this great sinne? thou hast done things vnto me that ought not to be done.

So Abimelech said vnto Abraham, What sawest thou that thou hast done this thing?

Then Abraham answered, Because I thought thus, Surely the feare of God is not in this place, and they will slay me for my wiues sake.

Yet in very deede she is my sister: for she is the daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother, and she is my wife.

Nowe when God caused me to wander out of my fathers house, I said then to her, This is thy kindnes that thou shalt shewe vnto me in all places where we come, Say thou of me, He is my brother.

Then tooke Abimelech sheepe and beeues, and men seruants, and women seruants, and gaue them vnto Abraham, and restored him Sarah his wife.

And Abimelech saide, Beholde, my land is before thee: dwell where it pleaseth thee.

Likewise to Sarah he said, Beholde, I haue giuen thy brother a thousand pieces of siluer: behold, he is the vaile of thine eyes to all that are with thee, and to all others: and she was thus reproued.

Then Abraham prayed vnto God, and God healed Abimelech, and his wife, and his women seruants: and they bare children.

For the Lord had shut vp euery wombe of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abrahams wife.

Und Abraham zog von da hinweg in das Land gegen Süden, und wohnte zwischen Kades und Sur, und weilte in Gerara.

Und von Sara, seinem Weibe, sagte er: Sie ist meine Schwester. Da schickte Abimelech, der König von Gerara, hin und nahm sie weg.

Aber Gott kam des Nachts im Traume zu Abimelech und sprach zu ihm: Siehe, du wirst sterben um des Weibes willen, das du weggenommen hast; denn sie hat einen Mann.

Abimelech aber hatte sie nicht berührt und sprach: Herr! willst du etwa ein nichtwissendes und gerechtes Volk töten?

Sagte er denn nicht selbst zu mir: Sie ist meine Schwester? Und auch sie sagte: Er ist mein Bruder? In der Einfalt meines Herzens und in der Reinheit meiner Hände habe ich dies getan.

Da sprach Gott zu ihm: Auch ich weiß, dass du es mit unschuldigem Herzen getan hast, und darum habe ich dich bewahrt, dass du nicht gegen mich sündigtest, und habe es nicht zugelassen, dass du sie berührtest.

So gib nun dem Manne sein Weib zurück, denn er ist ein Prophet, und er soll für dich beten, dass du lebest; wenn du sie aber nicht zurückgeben willst, so wisse, dass du sterben musst, du und alles, was dein ist.

Da stand Abimelech sogleich am frühen Morgen auf, und rief alle seine Knechte, und erzählte ihnen alle diese Dinge, und alle Männer gerieten in große Furcht.

Abimelech aber ließ Abraham rufen und sprach zu ihm: Was hast du uns angetan? Was haben wir gegen dich gesündigt, dass du über mich und mein Reich so schwere Schuld gebracht hast? Was du nicht hättest tun sollen, hast du uns angetan.

Und von neuem forderte er ihn auf und sprach: Was hast du beabsichtigt, dass du solches getan hast?

Da antwortete Abraham: Ich dachte bei mir, vielleicht ist keine Furcht Gottes an diesem Orte, und sie werden mich um meines Weibes willen töten.

Übrigens aber ist sie auch wirklich meine Schwester, als Tochter meines Vaters, aber nicht Tochter meiner Mutter, und ich habe sie zum Weibe genommen.

Als mich Gott aus meines Vaters Hause führte, sprach ich zu ihr: Diese Liebe erweise mir: an jedem Orte, an den wir kommen, sage, dass ich dein Bruder bin.

Da nahm Abimelech Schafe und Rinder, und Knechte und Mägde, und gab sie Abraham, und stellte ihm Sara, sein Weib, zurück,

und sprach: Das Land steht euch offen, wohne, wo immer es dir gefällt.

Zu Sara aber sagte er: Siehe, ich gebe deinem Bruder tausend Silberlinge. Dies sei dir eine Decke über die Augen vor allen, die bei dir sind, und wohin du immer kommst; und gedenke, dass dir Recht geworden ist.

Da betete Abraham, und Gott heilte Abimelech und sein Weib, und seine Mägde, und sie gebaren.

Denn der Herr hatte um Saras, des Weibes Abrahams, willen jeden Mutterschoß im Hause Abimelechs verschlossen.
