The Prophet Daniel

- Kapitel 2 -

And in the seconde yeere of the raygne of Nebuchad-nezzar, Nebuchad-nezzar dreamed dreames wherewith his spirite was troubled, and his sleepe was vpon him.

Then the King commanded to call the inchanters, and the astrologians and the sorcerers, and the Caldeans for to shewe the King his dreames: so they came and stoode before the King.

And the King sayde vnto them, I haue dreamed a dreame, and my spirite was troubled to knowe the dreame.

Then spake the Caldeans to the King in the Aramites language, O King, liue for euer: shewe thy seruants thy dreame, and wee shall shewe the interpretation.

And the King answered and sayd to the Caldeans, The thing is gone from me. If ye will not make me vnderstande the dreame with the interpretation thereof, ye shall be drawen in pieces, and your houses shall be made a iakes.

But if yee declare the dreame and the interpretation thereof, ye shall receyue of me gifts and rewardes, and great honour: therefore shewe me the dreame and the interpretation of it.

They answered againe, and sayde, Let the King shewe his seruantes the dreame, and wee will declare the interpretation thereof.

Then the King answered, and sayd, I knowe certeinly that ye would gaine the time, because ye see the thing is gone from me.

But if ye will not declare mee the dreame, there is but one iudgement for you: for ye haue prepared lying and corrupt wordes, to speake before me till the time bee changed: therefore tell me the dreame, that I may knowe, if yee can declare me the interpretation thereof.

Then the Caldeans answered before the King, and sayde, There is no man vpon earth that can declare the Kings matter: yea, there is neither king nor prince nor lorde that asked such things at an inchanter or astrologian or Caldean.

For it is a rare thing that the King requireth, and there is none other that can declare it before the King, except the gods whose dwelling is not with flesh.

For this cause the king was angrie and in great furie, and commanded to destroy all the wise men of Babel.

And when sentence was giuen, the wise men were slayne: and they sought Daniel and his fellowes to be put to death.

The Dream Revealed to Daniel

Then Daniel answered with counsel and wisedome to Arioch the Kings chiefe stewarde, which was gone foorth to put to death the wise men of Babel.

Yea, he answered and sayde vnto Arioch the kings captaine, Why is the sentence so hastie from the king? Then Arioch declared the thing to Daniel.

So Daniel went and desired the king that he woulde giue him leasure and that he woulde shewe the king the interpretation thereof.

The Daniel went to his house and shewed the matter to Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah his companions,

That they should beseech the God of heauen for grace in this secrete, that Daniel and his fellowes should not perish with the rest of ye wise men of Babel.

Then was the secret reueiled vnto Daniel in a vision by night: therefore Daniel praysed the God of heauen.

And Daniel answered and sayde, The Name of God be praysed for euer and euer: for wisedome and strength are his,

And hee changeth the times and seasons: he taketh away kings: he setteth vp kings: he giueth wisedome vnto the wise, and vnderstanding to those that vnderstand.

Hee discouereth the deepe and secrete things: he knoweth what is in darkenes, and the light dwelleth with him.

I thanke thee and prayse thee, O thou God of my fathers, that thou hast giuen mee wisedome and strength, and hast shewed me nowe the thing that wee desired of thee: for thou hast declared vnto vs the kings matter.

Daniel Interprets the Dream

Therefore Daniel went vnto Arioch, whome the King had ordeyned to destroy the wise men of Babel: he went and sayde thus vnto him, Destroy not the wise men of Babel, but bring me before the King, and I will declare vnto the King the interpretation.

Then Arioch brought Daniel before the King in all haste, and sayd thus vnto him, I haue found a man of the children of Iudah that were brought captiues, that will declare vnto the King the interpretation.

Then answered the King, and sayde vnto Daniel, whose name was Belteshazzar, Art thou able to shew me the dreame, which I haue seene, and the interpretation thereof?

Daniel answered in the presence of the King, and sayd, The secret which the King hath demanded, can neither the wise, the astrologians, the inchanters, nor the southsayers declare vnto the King.

But there is a God in heauen that reueileth secrets, and sheweth the King Nebuchad-nezzar what shall bee in the latter dayes. Thy dreame, and the things which thou hast seene in thine heade vpon thy bed, is this.

O King, when thou wast in thy bedde, thoughts came into thy mind, what should come to passe hereafter, and he that reueyleth secretes, telleth thee, what shall come.

As for me, this secret is not shewed mee for any wisedome that I haue, more then any other liuing, but onely to shewe the King the interpretation, and that thou mightest knowe the thoughts of thine heart.

O King, thou sawest, and beholde, there was a great image: this great image whose glory was so excellent, stood before thee, and the forme thereof was terrible.

This images head was of fine golde, his breast and his armes of siluer, his bellie and his thighs of brasse,

His legges of yron, and his feete were part of yron, and part of clay.

Thou beheldest it til a stone was cut without hands, which smote the image vpon his feete, that were of yron and clay, and brake them to pieces.

Then was the yron, the clay, the brasse, the siluer and the golde broken all together, and became like the chaffe of the sommer floures, and the winde caryed them away, that no place was founde for them: and the stone that smote the image, became a great mountaine, and filled the whole earth.

This is the dreame, and we will declare before the King the interpretation thereof.

O King, thou art a king of Kings: for the God of heauen hath giuen thee a kingdome, power, and strength, and glorie.

And in all places where the children of men dwell, the beasts of the fielde, and the foules of the heauen hath he giuen into thine hand, and hath made thee ruler ouer them al: thou art this heade of golde.

And after thee shall rise another kingdome, inferiour to thee, of siluer, and another third kingdome shalbe of brasse, which shall beare rule ouer all the earth.

And the fourth kingdome shall be strong as yron: for as yron breaketh in pieces, and subdueth all things, and as yron bruiseth all these things, so shall it breake in pieces, and bruise all.

Where as thou sawest the feete and toes, parte of potters clay, and part of yron: the kingdome shalbe deuided, but there shalbe in it of the strength of the yron, as thou sawest the yron mixt with the clay, and earth.

And as the toes of the feete were parte of yron, and parte of clay, so shall the kingdome be partly strong, and partly broken.

And where as thou sawest yron mixt with clay and earth, they shall mingle themselues with the seede of men: but they shall not ioyne one with another, as yron can not bee mixed with clay.

And in the dayes of these Kings, shall the God of heauen set vp a kingdome, which shall neuer be destroyed: and this kingdome shall not be giuen to another people, but it shall breake, and destroy al these kingdomes, and it shall stand for euer.

Where as thou sawest, that the stone was cut of the mountaine without handes, and that it brake in pieces the yron, the brasse, the clay, the siluer, and the golde: so the great God hath shewed the King, what shall come to passe hereafter, and the dreame is true, and the interpretation thereof is sure.

Nebuchadnezzar Promotes Daniel

Then the King Nebuchad-nezzar fell vpon his face, and bowed himselfe vnto Daniel, and commanded that they should offer meate offrings, and sweete odours vnto him.

Also the King answered vnto Daniel, and said, I know of a trueth that your God is a God of gods, and the Lord of Kings, and the reueiler of secrets, seeing thou couldest open this secret.

So the King made Daniel a great man, and gaue him many and great giftes. Hee made him gouernour ouer the whole prouince of Babel, and chiefe of the rulers, and aboue all the wise men of Babel.

Then Daniel made request to the King, and hee set Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego ouer the charge of the prouince of Babel: but Daniel sate in the gate of the King.

Nebukadnezars Traum

Im zweiten Jahre der Herrschaft Nabuchodonosors sah Nabuchodonosor ein Traumgesicht, über das sein Geist erschrak, und sein Traum entschwand ihm.

Da befahl der König, die Wahrsager und Weisen und Zauberer und Chaldäer zusammenzurufen, um dem Könige seinen Traum kundzutun. Als diese nun kamen und vor den König traten,

sprach der König zu ihnen: Ich habe ein Traumgesicht gehabt und mein Geist ist verwirrt und ich weiß nicht mehr, was ich gesehen habe.

Da antworteten die Chaldäer dem Könige in syrischer Sprache: O König, mögest du ewig leben! Teile den Traum deinen Knechten mit, so wollen wir kundtun, was er bedeutet.

Da antwortete der König und sprach zu den Chaldäern: Mein Beschluss ist gefasst. Wenn ihr mir nicht den Traum und seine Deutung angebt, so müsst ihr sterben und eure Häuser werden euch genommen werden.

Wenn ihr aber den Traum und seine Bedeutung angebt, so sollt ihr Belohnung, Geschenke und hohe Ehre von mir empfangen; darum tuet mir den Traum samt seiner Deutung kund.

Da antworteten sie zum zweiten Mal und sprachen: Der König möge seinen Knechten den Traum mitteilen, so wollen wir die Deutung kundtun.

Der König aber antwortete und sprach: Wahrlich! Ich sehe nun, dass ihr Zeit zu gewinnen sucht, weil ihr wisst, dass mein Beschluss gefasst ist.

Wenn ihr mir also den Traum nicht angebt, so kann ich von euch nur urteilen, dass ihr auch eine falsche und betrügerische Auslegung verabredet habt, um mich mit Reden hinzuhalten, bis die Zeit vorübergeht. Darum gebet mir den Traum an, damit ich erkenne, dass ihr auch die Auslegung der Wahrheit gemäß geben könnt!

Da antworteten die Chaldäer vor dem Könige und sprachen: Kein Mensch ist auf Erden, der zu erfüllen vermöchte, was du verlangst, o König! Aber auch nie hat ein großer und mächtiger König ein solches Verlangen an einen Wahrsager oder Weisen oder Chaldäer gerichtet.

Denn das, was du, o König! forderst, ist schwierig und man wird niemand finden, des es dem Könige kundtun könnte, außer den Göttern; diese aber haben mit den Menschen ja keinen Verkehr.

Als der König dies hörte, ergrimmte er und befahl in großem Zorne, alle Weisen Babylons umzubringen.

Als nun das Urteil erlassen war und die Weisen zum Tode geführt werden sollten, suchte man auch Daniel und seine Genossen, um sie zu töten.

Gott offenbart Nebukadnezars Traum

Da erkundigte sich Daniel nach dem Gesetze und Urteil bei Arioch, dem Anführer des Heeres des Königs, welcher ausgegangen war, die Weisen Babylons zu töten.

Und er fragte ihn, der vom Könige den Auftrag erhalten hatte, warum denn ein so grausamer Befehl vom Könige erlassen sei. Als Arioch dem Daniel die Sache mitgeteilt hatte,

ging Daniel zum Könige und bat denselben, ihm Zeit zu gewähren, dass er dem Könige die Erklärung geben könnte.

Alsdann begab er sich in sein Haus und teilte seinen Genossen, Ananias und Misael und Azarias, die Angelegenheit mit,

dass sie den Gott des Himmels dieses Geheimnisses wegen um Barmherzigkeit anflehen sollten, und dass Daniel und seine Gefährten nicht mit den übrigen Weisen Babylons getötet würden.

Da ward dem Daniel bei Nacht das Geheimnis in einem Gesichte geoffenbart. Daniel aber pries den Gott des Himmels

und hob an und sprach: Der Name des Herrn sei gepriesen von Ewigkeit zu Ewigkeit! denn sein ist Weisheit und Macht.

Er führt den Wechsel der Zeiten und Weltalter herbei und stürzt Reiche und festigt andere, er verleiht den Weisen Weisheit und den Einsichtigen Erkenntnis.

Er offenbart, was tief und verborgen ist; er weiß, was in der Finsternis begraben ist, und das Licht wohnt bei ihm.

Ich sage dir Dank, o Gott meiner Väter! und preise dich, dass du mir Weisheit und Stärke verliehen und mich nun hast wissen lassen, um was wir dich gebeten, dass du uns des Königs Angelegenheit geoffenbart hast.

Daniel erklärt den Traum

Hierauf ging Daniel zu Arioch, den der König beauftragt hatte, die Weisen Babylons zu töten, und sprach also zu ihm: Töte die Weisen Babylons nicht! führe mich vielmehr vor das Angesicht des Königs, so will ich dem Könige die Deutung geben.

Da führte Arioch Daniel eilends vor den König und sprach zu diesem: Ich habe unter den Söhnen der Gefangenen Judas einen Mann gefunden, welcher dem König die Deutung angeben will.

Der König begann und sprach zu Daniel, dessen Name Baltassar war: Bist du wohl wahrhaft imstande, mir das Traumgesicht, das ich gehabt habe, und seine Auslegung kundzutun?

Daniel antwortete dem Könige und sprach: Das Geheimnis, über das der König befragt, können die Weisen, die Wahrsager, die Zauberer und Zeichendeuter dem Könige nicht kundtun.

Doch ist ein Gott im Himmel, welcher die Geheimnisse enthüllt; er hat dir, o König Nabuchodonosor! kundgegeben, was am Ende der Zeiten geschehen wird. Dein Traum und die Gesichte deines Hauptes, die du auf deinem Lager gesehen, waren diese:

Es stiegen dir, o König, auf deinem Lager Gedanken auf, was nach deiner Zeit geschehen werde; und der, welcher die Geheimnisse offenbart, hat dir gezeigt, was in der Zukunft geschehen wird.

Auch mir ist dieses Geheimnis nicht durch meine Weisheit offenbart worden, als wäre diese größer als die aller Lebenden, sondern zu dem Ziele, damit dem Könige die Deutung kund werde und du deines Herzens Gedanken erfahrest.

Du, o König! schautest: Siehe, es stand vor deinen Augen eine gewaltige Bildsäule; diese Bildsäule war groß, von erhabener Gestalt, und stand vor dir und ihr Anblick war furchtbar.

Das Haupt dieser Bildsäule war vom feinsten Golde, die Brust und die Arme von Silber, der Bauch und die Lenden von Erz,

die Schenkel von Eisen, die Füße teils von Eisen, teils von Ton.

Als du so schautest, riss sich ein Stein vom Berge los, ohne Zutun von Menschenhänden, und stieß an die teils aus Eisen, teils aus Ton bestehenden Füße der Bildsäule und zertrümmerte diese.

Da wurden auf einem Schlag zermalmt Eisen, Ton, Erz, Silber und Gold und wurden gleichsam in Spreu einer Sommertenne aufgelöst und vom Winde weggeführt, so dass von ihnen keine Spur mehr zu finden war; der Stein aber, welcher die Bildsäule traf, ward zu einem großen Berge und erfüllte die ganze Erde.

Dies ist der Traum und nun wollen wir vor dir, o König! auch die Deutung verkünden.

Du bist der König der Könige und der Gott des Himmels hat dir Herrschaft, Macht, Gewalt und Herrlichkeit gegeben

und alles, wo immer Menschenkinder und Tiere des Feldes wohnen; selbst die Vögel des Himmels hat er in deine Hand gegeben und hat alles deiner Herrschaft unterworfen; du also bist das Haupt von Gold.

Aber nach dir wird ein anderes Reich sich erheben, geringer als du, von Silber; dann ein drittes Reich von Erz, das seine Herrschaft über die ganze Erde erstrecken wird.

Das vierte Reich wird wie Eisen sein; denn wie das Eisen alles zertrümmert und bezwingt, so wird dieses Reich alle jene zertrümmern und zerschmettern.

Dass aber die Füßen und die Zehen, die du sahest, teils aus Töpferton, teils von Eisen waren, bedeutet, dass das Reich nicht geeint sein wird; immerhin wird sein Grund von Eisen sein, gemäß dem, dass du Eisen mit Töpferton gemischt gesehen hast.

Und dass die Fußzehen teils von Eisen, teils von Ton waren, bedeutet, dass das Reich zum Teil stark und zum Teil zerbrechlich sein wird.

Dass du aber Eisen mit Ton gemischt sahest, bedeutet, dass sie sich zwar mit Hilfe von Menschensamen vermischen, aber dennoch keinen Zusammenhalt haben werden, so wie sich Eisen nicht mit Ton vermischen lässt.

In den Tagen jener Reiche wird der Gott des Himmels ein Reich aufrichten, welches in Ewigkeit nicht zerstört werden und dessen Herrschaft auf kein anderes Volk übergehen wird, dieses wird alle jene Reiche zermalmen und vernichten, es selbst aber wird in Ewigkeit bestehen;

wie du ja gesehen hast, dass der Stein sich vom Berge ohne Zutun von Menschenhänden losriss und Ton, Eisen, Erz, Silber und Gold zermalmte. So hat der große Gott dem Könige kundgetan, was in der Zukunft geschehen wird; der Traum ist wahrhaft und seine Deutung zuverlässig.

Daniel und seine Freunde werden befördert

Da fiel der König Nabuchodonosor auf sein Angesicht nieder, verneigte sich tief vor Daniel und befahl, ihm Schlachtopfer und Räucherwerk darzubringen.

Zu Daniel aber sprach der König also: Wahrlich! euer Gott ist der Gott der Götter und der Herr der Könige und der Offenbarer der Geheimnisse, denn du hast dieses Geheimnis zu enthüllen vermocht.

Alsdann erhob der König Daniel sehr und gab ihm viele und große Geschenke und setzte ihn zum Fürsten über alle Landschaften von Babylon und zum obersten Vorsteher über alle Weisen Babylons.

Auf die Bitte Daniels aber übergab der König die Verwaltung der Provinz Babylon Sidrach, Misach und Abdenago; Daniel selbst aber blieb an dem Hofe des Königs.
