- Kapitel 2 -

(Matthew 1:18–25)

And it happened in those days that a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, so that the whole world would be enrolled.

This was the first enrollment; it was made by the ruler of Syria, Quirinius.

And all went to be declared, each one to his own city.

Then Joseph also ascended from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David,

in order to be declared, with Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.

Then it happened that, while they were there, the days were completed, so that she would give birth.

And she brought forth her firstborn son. And she wrapped him in swaddling clothes and laid him in a manger, because there was no room for them at the inn.(a)

The Shepherds and the Angels

And there were shepherds in the same region, being vigilant and keeping watch in the night over their flock.

And behold, an Angel of the Lord stood near them, and the brightness of God shone around them, and they were struck with a great fear.

And the Angel said to them: “Do not be afraid. For, behold, I proclaim to you a great joy, which will be for all the people.

For today a Savior has been born for you in the city of David: he is Christ the Lord.

And this will be a sign for you: you will find the infant wrapped in swaddling clothes and lying in a manger.”

And suddenly there was with the Angel a multitude of the celestial army, praising God and saying,

“Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to men of good will.”

And it happened that, when the Angels had departed from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us cross over to Bethlehem and see this word, which has happened, which the Lord has revealed to us.”

And they went quickly. And they found Mary and Joseph; and the infant was lying in a manger.

Then, upon seeing this, they understood the word that had been spoken to them about this boy.

And all who heard it were amazed by this, and by those things which were told to them by the shepherds.

But Mary kept all these words, pondering them in her heart.

And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all the things that they had heard and seen, just as it was told to them.

Jesus Presented at the Temple

And after eight days were ended, so that the boy would be circumcised, his name was called JESUS, just as he was called by the Angel before he was conceived in the womb.

And after the days of her purification were fulfilled, according to the law of Moses, they brought him to Jerusalem, in order to present him to the Lord,

just as it is written in the law of the Lord, “For every male opening the womb shall be called holy to the Lord,”

and in order to offer a sacrifice, according to what is said in the law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves or two young pigeons.”

The Prophecy of Simeon

And behold, there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was just and God-fearing, awaiting the consolation of Israel. And the Holy Spirit was with him.

And he had received an answer from the Holy Spirit: that he would not see his own death before he had seen the Christ of the Lord.

And he went with the Spirit to the temple. And when the child Jesus was brought in by his parents, in order to act on his behalf according to the custom of the law,

he also took him up, into his arms, and he blessed God and said:

“Now you may dismiss your servant in peace, O Lord, according to your word.

For my eyes have seen your salvation,

which you have prepared before the face of all peoples:

the light of revelation to the nations and the glory of your people Israel.”

And his father and mother were wondering over these things, which were spoken about him.

And Simeon blessed them, and he said to his mother Mary: “Behold, this one has been set for the ruin and for the resurrection of many in Israel, and as a sign which will be contradicted.(b)

And a sword will pass through your own soul, so that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.”

The Prophecy of Anna

And there was a prophetess, Anna, a daughter of Phanuel, from the tribe of Asher. She was very advanced in years, and she had lived with her husband for seven years from her virginity.

And then she was a widow, even to her eighty-fourth year. And without departing from the temple, she was a servant to fasting and prayer, night and day.

And entering at the same hour, she confessed to the Lord. And she spoke about him to all who were awaiting the redemption of Israel.(c)

The Return to Nazareth

(Matthew 2:19–23)

And after they had performed all things according to the law of the Lord, they returned to Galilee, to their city, Nazareth.

Now the child grew, and he was strengthened with the fullness of wisdom. And the grace of God was in him.

The Boy Jesus at the Temple

And his parents went every year to Jerusalem, at the time of the solemnity of Passover.

And when he had become twelve years old, they ascended to Jerusalem, according to the custom of the feast day.

And having completed the days, when they returned, the boy Jesus remained in Jerusalem. And his parents did not realize this.

But, supposing that he was in the company, they went a day’s journey, seeking him among their relatives and acquaintances.

And not finding him, they returned to Jerusalem, seeking him.

And it happened that, after three days, they found him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the doctors, listening to them and questioning them.

But all who listened to him were astonished over his prudence and his responses.

And upon seeing him, they wondered. And his mother said to him: “Son, why have you acted this way toward us? Behold, your father and I were seeking you in sorrow.”

And he said to them: “How is it that you were seeking me? For did you not know that it is necessary for me to be in these things which are of my Father?”(d)

And they did not understand the word that he spoke to them.

And he descended with them and went to Nazareth. And he was subordinate to them. And his mother kept all these words in her heart.

And Jesus advanced in wisdom, and in age, and in grace, with God and men.

Christus, geboren von Maria

(Matthäus 1,18-25)

Es geschah aber in denselben Tagen, dass vom Kaiser Augustus ein Befehl ausging, dass der ganze Erdkreis aufgeschrieben werde.

Diese Aufschreibung war die erste, und geschah durch Cyrinus, den Statthalter von Syrien.

Und alle gingen hin, sich aufschreiben zu lassen, ein jeder in seine Stadt.

Da zog auch Joseph von Galiläa, aus der Stadt Nazareth, hinauf nach Judäa in die Stadt Davids, welche Bethlehem heißt, weil er aus dem Hause und Geschlechte Davids war,

um sich aufschreiben zu lassen mit Maria, seinem verlobten Weibe, welche schwanger war,

Es begab sich aber, als sie daselbst waren, erfüllten sich die Tage, dass sie gebären sollte.

Und sie gebar ihren erstgeborenen Sohn, und wickelte ihn in Windeln, und legte ihn in eine Krippe, weil für sie kein Platz war in der Herberge.

Herrlichkeit im Höchsten

Und es waren Hirten in derselben Gegend, die hüteten und in der Nacht Wache hielten bei ihrer Herde.

Und siehe, ein Engel des Herrn stand vor ihnen, und die Herrlichkeit Gottes umleuchtete sie, und sie fürchteten sich sehr.

Der Engel aber sprach zu ihnen: Fürchtet euch nicht! denn sehet, ich verkündige euch große Freude, die allem Volke zuteil werden wird;

dass euch heute der Heiland geboren worden, in der Stadt Davids, welcher Christus, der Herr, ist.

Und dies soll euch zum Zeichen sein: Ihr werdet ein Kind finden, in Windeln eingewickelt und in einer Krippe liegend.

Und plötzlich war bei dem Engel eine Menge der himmlischen Heerschaaren, welche Gott lobten, und sprachen:

Ehre Gott in der Höhe, und Friede den Menschen auf Erden, die guten Willens sind!

Und es geschah, als die Engel von ihnen hinweggegangen waren in den Himmel, sprachen die Hirten zueinander: Lasset uns hingehen bis Bethlehem, und das Wort sehen, das geschehen ist, und das uns der Herr kundgetan hat.

Und sie kamen eilend, und fanden Maria und Joseph, und das Kind, welches in der Krippe lag.

Da sie es aber sahen, machten sie bekannt, was zu ihnen von diesem Kinde gesagt worden war.

Und alle, die es hörten, wunderten sich, und über die Dinge, welche von den Hirten ihnen erzählt worden.

Maria aber bewahrte alle diese Worte, und überlegte sie in ihrem Herzen.

Und die Hirten kehrten zurück, indem sie Gott priesen und lobten um alles dessen willen, was sie gehört und gesehen hatten, so wie es zu ihnen gesagt worden war.

Beschneidung Jesu

Und nachdem acht Tage um waren, und das Kind beschnitten werden sollte, ward sein Name Jesus genannt, wie ihn schon der Engel genannt hatte, ehe er empfangen ward.

Jesus wird im Tempel präsentiert

Da nun die Tage ihrer Reinigung nach dem Gesetze Moses erfüllt waren, brachten sie ihn nach Jerusalem, um ihn dem Herrn darzustellen;

wie geschrieben steht im Gesetze des Herrn: Jede männliche Erstgeburt soll dem Herrn geheiligt werden;

und um ein Opfer darzubringen, wie es dem Gesetze des Herrn geboten ist, ein Paar Turteltauben, oder zwei junge Tauben.

Simeon sieht Gottes Erlösung

Und siehe, es war ein Mann zu Jerusalem, mit Namen Simeon, und dieser Mann war gerecht und gottesfürchtig, und harrte auf den Trost Israels, und der heil. Geist war in ihm.

Es war ihm von dem heil. Geiste geoffenbaret worden, dass er den Tod nicht sehen werde, bis er zuvor den Gesalbten des Herrn geschaut.

Dieser kam aus Antrieb des Geistes in den Tempel; und als die Eltern das Kind Jesus hineinbrachten, um da für ihn zu tun, was nach dem Gesetze Gewohnheit war,

nahm er es auf seine Arme, pries Gott, und sprach:

Nun entlässest du, Herr! deinen Diener nach deinem Worte im Frieden;

denn meine Augen haben dein Heil gesehen,

das du bereitet hast vor dem Angesichte aller Völker,

ein Licht zur Erleuchtung der Heiden und zur Verherrlichung deines Volkes Israel.

Und sein Vater und seine Mutter waren voll Verwunderung über die Dinge, welche von ihm gesagt wurden.

Und Simeon segnete sie, und sprach zu Maria, seiner Mutter: Siehe, dieser ist gesetzt zum Falle und zur Auferstehung vieler in Israel, und zu einem Zeichen, dem widersprochen werden wird;

und auch deine eigene Seele wird ein Schwert durchdringen, damit die Gedanken vieler Herzen offenbar werden.

Anna legt Zeugnis ab für den Erlöser

Es war auch eine Prophetin, Anna, eine Tochter Phanuels, aus dem Stamme Aser; dieselbe war hochbetagt, hatte nach ihrer Jungfrauschaft sieben Jahre mit ihrem Manne gelebt,

und war nun eine Witwe von vierundachtzig Jahren. Sie wich nicht von dem Tempel, und diente Gott mit Fasten und Beten Tag und Nacht.

Auch diese kam zu derselben Stunde hinzu, pries den Herrn, und redete von ihm zu allen, welche die Erlösung Israels erwarteten.

Die Familie kehrt nach Nazareth zurück

(Matthäus 2,19-23)

Und nachdem sie alles nach dem Gesetze des Herrn vollendet hatten, kehrten sie nach Galiläa in ihre Stadt Nazareth zurück.

Das Kind aber wuchs und ward stark, voll Weisheit; und Gottes Gnade war auf ihm.

Der Jesusknabe verblüfft die Gelehrten

Und seine Eltern gingen alle Jahre nach Jerusalem am Osterfeste.

Als er nun zwölf Jahre alt war, gingen sie nach der Gewohnheit des Festtages nach Jerusalem hinauf.

Und da sie am Ende der Festtage wieder zurückkehrten, blieb der Knabe Jesus in Jerusalem, ohne dass es seine Eltern wussten.

Da sie aber meinten, er sei bei der Reisegesellschaft, gingen sie eine Tagreise weit, und suchten ihn unter den Verwandten und Bekannten.

Und da sie ihn nicht fanden, kehrten sie nach Jerusalem zurück, ihn suchend.

Und es geschah, nach drei Tagen fanden sie ihn im Tempel, wie er unter den Lehrern saß und ihnen zuhörte, und sie befragte.

Es staunten aber alle, die ihn hörten, über seine Einsicht und seine Antworten.

Und als sie ihn sahen, verwunderten sie sich und seine Mutter sprach zu ihm: Sohn! warum hast du uns das getan? Siehe, dein Vater und ich haben dich mit Schmerzen gesucht!

Er sprach zu ihnen: Warum habet ihr mich gesucht? Wusstet ihr nicht, dass ich in dem sein muss, was meines Vaters ist?

Sie aber verstanden dies Wort nicht, das er zu ihnen sagte.

Jesus nimmt an Weisheit und Gunst zu

Und er zog mit ihnen hinab, und kam nach Nazareth, und war ihnen untertan. Und seine Mutter bewahrte alle diese Worte in ihrem Herzen. Ob. V. 19.

Jesus aber nahm zu an Weisheit und Alter und Gnade bei Gott und den Menschen.
