- Kapitel 1 -

The message that Habakkuk the prophet received,

“Yahweh, how long shall I cry for help, and you will not hear? I have cried out to you in horror, ‘Violence!’ but you will not save me.
3
Why do you make me see iniquity and look upon wrongdoing? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and contention rises up.
4
Therefore, the law is weakened, and justice does not last for any time. For the wicked surround the righteous; therefore false justice goes out.” Yahweh replies to Habakkuk

The LORD’s Answer

“Look at the nations and examine them; be amazed and astonished! For I am surely about to do something in your days that you will not believe when it is reported to you.

For look! I am about to raise up the Chaldeans-that fierce and impetuous nation-they are marching throughout the breadth of the land to seize homes that were not their own.

They are terrifying and fearsome; their judgment and splendor proceed from themselves.

Their horses also are swifter than leopards, quicker than the evening wolves. So their horses stamp, and their horsemen come from a great distance-they fly like an eagle hurrying to eat.
9
They all come for violence; their multitudes go like the desert wind, and they gather captives like sand.
10
So they mock kings, and rulers are only a mockery for them. They laugh at every stronghold, for they heap up earth and take them.
11
Then the wind will rush on; it will move past-guilty men, those whose might is their god.” Habakkuk asks Yahweh another question,

Habakkuk’s Second Complaint

(Psalm 11:1–7)

“Are you not from ancient times, Yahweh my God, my Holy One? We will not die. Yahweh has ordained them for judgment, and you, Rock, have established them for correction.
13
Your eyes are too pure to gaze upon evil, and you are not able to look on wrongdoing with favor; why then have you looked favorably on those who betray? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than they are?

You make men like fish in the sea, like creeping things without a ruler over them.
15
They bring up all of them with fishhooks; they drag men away in fishnets and gather them in their net. This is why they rejoice and shout exuberantly.
16
Therefore, they sacrifice to their fishing nets and burn incense to their net, for fattened beasts are their portion, and the fatty meat is their food.
17
Will they therefore empty their fishing nets and continue to slaughter the nations, feeling no compassion?”

Die Frage des Propheten

Wie lange, Herr! soll ich rufen und du hörst nicht? Soll ich vor dir über Gewalt klagen, die ich leide, und du hilfst nicht?

Warum lässest du mich Unrecht und Mühsal schauen, Raub und Ungerechtigkeit vor meinen Augen geschehen? Streit hat sich erhoben und Widerspruch gar mächtig.

Darum wird gebrochen das Gesetz und das Recht kommt nimmer mehr zum Vorschein, denn der Gottlose überwältigt den Gerechten, darum ergeht verkehrtes Gericht.

Die Antwort des HERRN

Schauet umher unter den Völkern und sehet, staunet und entsetzet euch! Denn ein Werk geschieht in euern Tagen, das niemand glaubt, wenn es erzählt wird.

Denn sehet, ich reize die Chaldäer auf, ein heftiges und ungestümes Volk, das über der Erde Weite dahinzieht, Wohnsitze einzunehmen, die nicht sein sind.

Schrecklich und furchtbar ist es, sein Recht und seine Wucht geht von ihm aus.
8
Leichter als Panther sind seine Rosse, flinker als Wölfe am Abend, weithin ziehen seine Reiter; denn seine Reiter kommen aus der Ferne, fliegen daher wie der Adler, der sich auf den Fraß stürzt.

Alle gehen auf Raub aus, ihr Angesicht ist wie Glutwind, wie Sand rafft es Gefangene zusammen.

Über Könige feiert es Triumph, Fürsten sind ihm zum Gespött, jeder Feste lacht es, es schüttet einen Wall auf und erobert sie.

Dann aber erneuert sich seine Kühnheit, es zieht hin und kommt zu Falle und dies ist seine Stärke, die es von seinem Gott hat.

Die zweite Frage des Propheten

(Psalm 11,1-7)

Bist du nicht, o Herr, von Anfang mein Gott gewesen, mein Heiliger? Und werden wir nicht sterben? Herr! zu richten hast du ihn gesetzt, verordnet den Starken, ihn bestellt zu strafen.

Deine Augen sind zu rein, um Böses zu sehen und auf Ungerechtigkeit zu schauen vermagst du nicht. Warum siehst du den Übeltätern zu und schweigst, wenn der Gottlose den, der gegen ihn im Recht ist, verschlingt?

Du machtest die Menschen den Fischen des Meeres gleich und wie das Gewürme, das keinen Herrn hat.

Alles zieht er mit der Angel empor, zieht es in seinem Garne fort und sammelt es in sein Netz, darüber freut er sich und frohlockt.
16
Darum bringt er seinem Garn Schlachtopfer dar und opfert seinem Netze, denn durch sie ward sein Anteil fett und seine Speise köstlich.
17
Darum also breitet er sein Netz aus und würgt immerfort Völker ohne Schonung.
