- Kapitel 11 -

(Deuteronomy 32:8; Acts 2:1–13)

Now the whole earth used one language and had the same words.

As they journeyed in the east, they found a plain in the land of Shinar and they settled there.

They said to one another, “Come, let us make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They had brick instead of stone and tar as mortar.

They said, “Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower whose top will reach to the sky, and let us make a name for ourselves. If we do not, we will be scattered across the surface of the whole earth.”

So Yahweh came down to see the city and the tower which the descendants of Adam had built.

Yahweh said, “Look, they are one people with the same language, and they are beginning to do this! Soon nothing that they intend to do will be impossible for them.

Come, let us go down and confuse their language there, so that they may not understand each other.”

So Yahweh scattered them from there across the surface of all the earth and they stopped building the city.

Therefore, its name was called Babel, because there Yahweh confused the language of the whole earth and from there Yahweh scattered them abroad over the surface of all the earth.

Genealogy from Shem to Abram

(1 Chronicles 1:17–27)

These were the descendants of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old, and he became the father of Arpachshad two years after the flood.

Shem lived five hundred years after he became the father of Arpachshad. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

When Arpachshad had lived thirty-five years, he became the father of Cainan.

Arpachshad lived 403 years after he became the father of Cainan. He also became the father of other sons and daughters. And Cainan lived a hundred and thirty years and became the father of Shelah; and Canaan lived after he became the father of Shelah, three hundred and thirty years, and became the father of other sons and daughters.

When Shelah had lived thirty years, he became the father of Eber.

Shelah lived 403 years after he became the father of Eber. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

When Eber had lived thirty-four years, he became the father of Peleg.

Eber lived 430 years after he became the father of Peleg. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

When Peleg had lived thirty years, he became the father of Reu.

Peleg lived 209 years after he became the father of Reu. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

When Reu had lived thirty-two years, he became the father of Serug.

Reu lived 207 years after he became the father of Serug. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

When Serug had lived thirty years, he became the father of Nahor.

Serug lived two hundred years after he became the father of Nahor. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

When Nahor had lived twenty-nine years, he became the father of Terah.

Nahor lived 119 years after he became the father of Terah. He also became the father of other sons and daughters.

After Terah had lived seventy years, he became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

Terah’s Descendants

Now these were the descendants of Terah. Terah became the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran, and Haran became the father of Lot.

Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his birth, in Ur of the Chaldeans.

Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram’s wife was Sarai and the name of Nahor’s wife was Milcah, a daughter of Haran, who was the father of Milcah and Iscah.

Now Sarai was barren; she had no child.

Terah took Abram his son, Lot the son of his son Haran, and Sarai his daughter-in-law, his son Abram’s wife, and together they left Ur of the Chaldeans, to go into the land of Canaan. But they came to Haran and stayed there.

Terah lived 205 years and then died in Haran.

Der Turmbau zu Babel

(5. Mose 32,8; Apostelgeschichte 2,1-13)

Es war aber auf Erden nur eine Sprache und einerlei Rede.

Und als sie vom Aufgange herzogen, fanden sie eine Ebene im Lande Sennaar und ließen sich daselbst nieder.

Und sie sprachen zueinander: Kommet, lasset uns Ziegel machen und sie im Feuer brennen! Und sie gebrauchten Ziegel als Steine, und Erdpech als Mörtel.

Und sie sprachen: Kommet, lasset uns seine Stadt bauen, und einen Turm, dessen Spitze bis in den Himmel reicht; und lasset uns unsern Namen berühmt machen, ehe wir uns in alle Lande zerstreuen.

Da stieg der Herr herab, um die Stadt und den Turm zu sehen, den die Söhne Adams bauten,

und sprach: Siehe, sie sind ein Volk und haben alle dieselbe Sprache; und sie haben angefangen dies zu tun und werden von dem, was sie sich vorgenommen haben, nicht ablassen, bis sie es im Werke vollbringen.

Wohlan also, lasset uns hinabsteigen und daselbst ihre Sprache verwirren, dass keiner mehr die Sprache seines Nächsten verstehe.

So zerstreute sie der Herr von dort in alle Länder, und sie standen davon ab, die Stadt zu bauen.

Darum ward ihr Name Babel genannt, weil daselbst sie Sprache der ganzen Menschheit verwirrt ward; und von da zerstreute sie der Herr über alle Lande.

Sems Nachkommenschaft

(1. Chronik 1,17-27)

Dies sind die Geschlechtsfolgen Sems: Sem war hundert Jahre alt, als er Arpharad zeugte, zwei Jahre nach der Flut.

Und Sem lebte, nachdem er Arpharad gezeugt, fünfhundert Jahre und zeugte Söhne und Töchter.

Als nun Arpharad fünfunddreißig Jahre alt war, zeugte er Sale.

Und Arpharad lebte, nachdem er Sale gezeugt, dreihundert und drei Jahre und zeugte Söhne und Töchter.

Als Sale nun dreißig Jahre alt war, zeugte er Heber.

Und Sale lebte, nachdem er Heber gezeugt, vierhundert und drei Jahre und zeugte Söhne und Töchter.

Als Heber aber vierunddreißig Jahre alt war, zeugte er Phaleg.

Und Heber lebte, nachdem er Phaleg gezeugt, vierhundert und dreißig Jahre und zeugte Söhne und Töchter.

Als Phaleg dreißig Jahre alt war, zeugte er Reu.

Und Phaleg lebte, nachdem er Reu gezeugt, zweihundert und neun Jahre und zeugte Söhne und Töchter.

Als Reu aber zweiunddreißig Jahre alt war, zeugte er Sarug.

Und Reu lebte, nachdem er Sarug gezeugt, zweihundert und sieben Jahre und zeugte Söhne und Töchter.

Als Sarug dreißig Jahre alt war, zeugte er Nachor.

Und Sarug lebte, nachdem er Nachor gezeugt, zweihundert Jahre und zeugte Söhne und Töchter.

Als nun Nachor neunundzwanzig Jahre alt war, zeugte er Thare.

Und Nachor lebte, nachdem er Thare gezeugt, hundert und neunzehn Jahre und zeugte Söhne und Töchter.

Als Thare siebzig Jahre alt war, zeugte er Abram, Nachor, und Aran.

Die Nachkommen Terahs

Dies sind die Geschlechtsfolgen Thares: Thare zeugte Abram, Nachor und Aran. Aran aber zeugte Lot.

Und Aran starb vor seinem Vater Thare, im Lande seiner Heimat, zu Ur in Chaldäa.

Abram aber und Nachor nahmen Weiber: der Name des Weibes Abrams war Sarai; und der Name des Weibes Nachors war Melcha, eine Tochter Arans, des Vaters der Melcha und des Vaters der Jescha.

Sarai aber war unfruchtbar und hatte keine Kinder.

Da nahm Thare seinen Sohn Abram, und Lot, den Sohn Arans, den Sohn seines Sohnes, und Sarai, seine Schwiegertochter, das Weib Abrams, seines Sohnes, und führte sie aus Ur in Chaldäa hinweg, um in das Land Chanaan zu gehen; und sie kamen bis Haran und ließen sich daselbst nieder.

Die Tage Thares waren zweihundert und fünf Jahre, und er starb in Haran.
